2. Recalling life as a wartime navigator
Bruce Curry remembers the time he spent as a
navigator during World War II just as if it was
yesterday. Based in Italy, he flew more than 50
bombing missions in just a year.
“I signed up for the Air Force, because I really
wanted to be a pilot, but my eyes were too bad. I
did have an engineering class, so they said I could
be the navigator,” says Bruce, 90, “So I didn’t get
to pilot, but I still got to fly and got to tell the pilot
where to go and how to get there.”
After the war ended, the Appleton native attended
Marquette University on the GI Bill, earning a
degree in engineering. Bruce then joined the
Blower Application Company where he eventually
became a co-owner. In the mid-1980s, he sold
his shares in the company. Despite the success he
had in business, his time in the Air Force brings
the most pride.
“It was the best experience,” says Bruce, adding
he got to relive it again in July 2010 when he
participated in an Honor Flight to Washington,
D.C. As part of the day, he and other World War
II veterans flew from Outagamie County Regional
Airport to the nation’s capital, where they toured
the World War II Memorial. “It was just amazing.
I learned some things in the exhibits that I
didn’t know before, and it was great seeing the
monument.”
Bruce has
a special
commemorative
coin he received
on the trip that
he proudly
shows off to
visitors. “It’s
really special.
That was a really
long day, since
you fly there and
come back in the
same day, but
I’d do it again.”
His daughter, Jennifer, nominated him to be
a Hometown Hero on WFRV Channel 5. The
segment honors veterans and shares their stories
with viewers. “I didn’t like the attention at first,
but it was great to talk with them about what I
did and share the story since some of the younger
people don’t know about it,” Bruce says.
Looking back at his time in the Air Force, Bruce
says he always stayed focus on his missions. “I
knew what I was doing was right and that I had a
job to do, and I went out there and got it done.”
Construction update
The crews continue the beginning work on the

increase the array of services at Touchmark.

Celebrating the
possibilities
“‘Why not’ is a slogan for an
interesting life.”
– Mason Cooley,
professor and aphorist
Year’s end brings a time
for reflection and shared
memories. All of the holidays
and holy days for people of
faith have celebratory events
and traditions. Often the
gifts of the spirit, friendships,
family relationships,
victories, and losses are
remembered.
As 2014 approaches, many
ponder, “What’s next?”
Perhaps the better question
is, “Why not?” Things on the
bucket list might be due for a
move to the action list.
Healthy aging means
