Google has recently unveiled a new Android app that allows users to get all of their news in a single,
convenient place. The magazine and news-reading app has been dubbed Newsstand, and has been
designed as a highly customizable source of information. Android owners can sync a variety of blogs
and website newsfeeds with the app in addition to commercial news outlets such as The New York
Times, The Wall Street Journal, and The Financial Times. The new app combines two of Google’s
previous reading apps, Currents and Play Magazine, into a single piece of software. Not only is
Newsstand more convenient for users, but it allows publishers greater control over their online
material. The New York Times, for example, allows Newsstand Users to read 15 articles for free before
prompting readers to sign up for a subscription.
