Introduction to Internet of Things for Product People.
A presentation I gave to stir up some discussion on the IoT topic in a Product Management Networking day organized by Prodman Oy on Nov 11, 2016.
The presentation covers the impact of IoT on business models, ecosystem, customers, product companies, product management skills, etc.

Value Chain / Ecosystem
With more complex IoT enabled products, the ecosystem is
bound to change, too.
Check your position! Can you be bypassed? Can you ensure
Win-Win-Win?
“Demanding a tidy map of IoT may well be a fool’s errand. The Internet of Things refers to a universal paradigm greater
than any one application, device, industry, protocol, and even infrastructure.
Furthermore, the IoT ecosystem is growing as we speak. One of the hallmarks of disruptive technology (especially early in
the disruption curve) is that we struggle to define and understand what it is in the first place. As use cases, enterprise
adoption, consumer preferences, and technological infrastructure continue to evolve, so too will the IoT and by extension,
our understanding of where it is and what it is not.
What we do know today is that the promise of IoT is that its sum far outweighs the parts. In short, the true value of IoT is
not in the components that make up the fabric, but in the connections across the fabric itself and in the insights and
efficiency gained from those connections.”

Value Example: Rotterdam & Enevo
“We found by monitoring fill rates [in waste
containers], that we had the opportunity to reduce the
number of collection days, and that we were easily
able to meet the target of a 20 percent [cost]
reduction.”
Joost van Maaren, Gemeente Rotterdam

What IoT Means to Product People
● Fog Ahead!
These May Change:
● Products → Services
● Technology Stack
● Business Model
● Value Chain
● Rate of Change

Competence Needs (continued)Competence Needs (continued)
● Depends on How IoT Affects
Your Products, Partners, and
Customers – Let's Discuss!
● At least, get familiar with:
– Digital Customer Experience,
Hackathons, IoT security, Value
creation models
● Personally, IoT has required
me to put more attention to:
– Service Design
– Change Management
– Electronics & Mechanics
– Networking (things and people)
– Predictive Analytics, BI
– Big Data
