Since the existence of life in this world fight has always been a basic element for survival.
Fighting by using hands use to be the most convenient way of winning any conflict or as a
defense mechanism in early civilizations. This tradition later on became a source of
entertainment for the bystanders and finally it became a sport. That’s how boxing came into
existence. Now as the word sport reflects a peaceful and competitive activity, boxing can’t
afford to have broken knuckles or cracked jaw-bones. Hence ‘Boxing Gloves’ was invented as a
solution. Although Boxing gloves were invented in order to defeat the opponent by hook or by
crook but now it is more likely to be on a ‘safety first’ basis.
In earlier days the only things close to hand protection were leather straps wrapped around
hands and if we move on to roman era, these gentle hand-friendly gloves turned into killing
weapon by adding brass studs and spikes. Later on, modified versions of boxing gloves came
into being and some safety measure was considered in order to reduce serious injuries. The
gloves are now made according to the game requirement. For example, formal matches’ gloves
are used in professional matches, training/ practice gloves for the sole purpose of training
which is usually done on a punching bag and gender or sparring gloves accordingly.
Most up-to-date models of boxing gloves are made up of breathable-palm technology in which
there are tiny holes at the palm side of gloves that can ventilate palms and dry out sweat. Other
modernized features may include thumb lock, padded wrist area and water/ sweat resistant
inner lining. These gloves usually have an adjustable Velcro strap and leather back. The weights
of gloves are vary from comfort level of users but it is said that the heavier the gloves, the
better. Same is the case with size, it, again, depends on user’s hands size. In order to use the
gloves, they are simply slid in hands and strapped on the wrist properly. But sometimes, people
wrap a cotton cloth around palms because this way they get a tight grip and it also acts as a
sweat soaker.
The usage of gloves depends on the user. Some gloves used more frequently may become worn
out and would not stay the same for long. But yes, the user should be cautious about keeping
the gloves hygienic this way glove life can be increased. Because of nonstop usage, the sweat in
the gloves allows bacteria to grow in them which can be harmful for the user. Some of the ways
to keep the gloves bacteria-free are; wrapping a cotton cloth around palm before putting on
gloves, using a glove deodorant, after using place the gloves in open air or in front of fan, keep
the gloves in a freezer for at least 24 hour (freezing temperature kills the bacteria, but make
sure u have plastic-wrapped them) and lastly NEVER put your gloves in a gym bag.
