Observation methods.
1. Narrative Account 1
Child: Child A is 2 years and 10 months old. He has been in the setting since he was
Room: Giraffe room within the daycare setting.
Purpose: To observe Child A’s language and social skills during child initiated play.
Context: It’s the beginning of the session and we have set out a variety of toys and activities
for the children to choose from.There is four other children and three key persons present in
the room.Child A upon arrival has chosen to play at the table where the cars, trucks and
garages are laid out.
Observation:
Child A is bent over the table on his own holding a truck in his right hand and pushing it
through the garage. As he is doing so, his making “broom broom” sounds.Child A then
places the truck in the garage and turns to picka smaller car and places this on top of the
truck.With the cars still in the garage, Child A carefully picks up the garage with both hands,
bends down and places the garage on the carpet. Child A then lays on the floorfacing the
garage and pushes the lever making the car go up and down.He does this with a smile on his
face. Child A then lifts up his head as henotices Child B staring at him with a smile on her
face. Excitedly Child A says “look”making eye motion at the cars going up and down as he
pushes the lever.Child A then stretches over and hands Child B a car and says “here
yours”.Child A then lays down again pushing the lever up and down with Child B sat next to
him pushing hercar around the garage.After a few seconds Child A lifts his head up and
looks in the direction where three of the other children and a key person are laughing as they
are looking at the photos on the birthday charts. Smiling with a car in hand, Child A stands up
and walks over to where the key person and the other children are sat chatting and
laughing.He stands for a while watching them,then he taps the key person on the leg and
says “that’s me” pointing at his photo on the chart.As the key person acknowledges Child A,
he looks at the key person with a smile on his face and says “yeah me” with hands in the air.
Evaluation:
Child A is satisfied to play independently and shows his willingness to share what he is
playing with.He also displays good physical skills as he maneuvers the cars and garage.He
uses fewer words and is easily understood. Child A has been able to show his emotion and
curiosity when he over hears other children laughing and wants to join in. Child A is able to
identify his photo and joins in emotionally with the others in the group.
2. Narrative Account 2
Child:Child A is 2 years and 10 months old. He has been in the setting since he was
Room:Giraffe room, Child A’s usual room within the daycare setting.
Purpose: To observe Child A’s fine motor skills during a adult-led activity.
Context:It is after the 10 O’clock snack and all the children are sat round the table listening
to the adult-led activity.
Observation:
Child A sits quietly at the table listening to the key person explain about the activity. Child A
stretches over the table to reach for a pair of scissors. He picks a pair of scissors, using his
right hand then puts his pointer finger into one handle of the scissors and his thumb into the
other handle of the scissors. Child B says He then picks up his piece of paper and very
carefully puts his paper through the open blade. Child A says “close” as he cuts through the
paper. He makes a clear cut through the paper, turns to the key person holding up the cut
paper and says “look” with a smile on his face. Child A carefully cuts through the remaining
paper then he swaps the scissors to his left hand. Child A tries to fit his fingers through the
scissors but it keeps falling onto the table. After a few attempts Child A says “hey that’s the
wrong one” swapping the scissors back to his right hand.
Child A fits his fingers in the scissors and continues to cut the paper carefully.
Shows good control and good concentration skills.
