Editor's Notes
Karibu! Welcome to your St. John’s global mission ministry! Thank you for coming. >>Global Mission Team briefly introduces themselves In this session, we want to give you a glimpse at one project of the St. John’s global mission team: Our Companion Synod Relationship with Pare Diocese, Tanzania.
The ELCA engages in God’s mission in more than 90 countries around the world through companion churches. St. John’s financially supports this in a number of ways – the Lenten boxes, the quarters collection, $1000 towards missionary support, other??? Our companion synod is located in Tanzania, a country that is marked by a star on this map.
In Africa, the church is at the center of society. Most African Christians look to their churches for education, health care, worship, and fellowship. From their place at the center of society, African Lutheran churches are growing rapidly. The ELCA walks side by side with African churches. As they face dilemmas and pandemics, so do we. As they identify priorities, we support them. Through ELCA personnel and grants, the ELCA accompanies African Lutheran churches in evangelism, Christian education, leadership. You can see where Tanzania is on the continent, now let’s get even closer . . .
Here we are . . . the country of Tanzania. The SE Iowa Synod has a companion synod relationship with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania, which is organized into 20 dioceses, in the similar way that the ELCA is organized by synods. We are matched specifically with the Pare Diocese , located in the NE corner of Tanzania, adjacent to the majestic Mount Kilimanjaro. >>may wish to show the letter of agreement with Pare Diocese as another visual???
Before we go into the nature of the companion relationship, let’s go over some basic facts about the country of Tanzania. >>each bullet point will fade in on mouse click >>may wish to mention the meaning of the flag: Tanzanian Flag Meaning: The green stripe symbolizes agriculture and the fertility of the land. The black represents the citizens of Tanzania. The blue stripe stands for the Indian Ocean which is on Tanzania's eastern coastline, and the yellow stripe represents the country's mineral wealth. Effective date: 30 June 1964.
Yet this is the Tanzania we know. . .a place of beautiful people, dear friends, and faithful Christians. >>if you like, say more about this picture.
What exactly is a companion synod relationship? The companion synod relationship is based on the idea of “accompaniment” whereby the relationship is defined in a mutual way. The ELCA promotes a an “accompaniment” style of relationship. Accompaniment is a way of walking together in solidarity that practices interdependence and mutuality . Through the accompaniment model, the relationship is based on mutual respect . . . and a whole lot of listening! Together, we work to set the path of how we will move forward as companion synods. Think “three cups of tea” – the value of listening as a way to grow the relationships. >>feel free to say a little more if you like
As part of the companion relationship, we exchange visits – our Tanzanian counterparts visit us; and we visit them >>say more about this picture if you like >> good time to briefly explain Todd Byerly’s role and make the link of the $1000 for missionary support
We wanted to tell you about our trip to the ELCT Pare Diocese in Tanzania February 2008. >>say a little about this slide, who went on the trip >>intro the trip
>>might want to give a couple points about the purpose of this trip >>say a little about this slide, if you like
>>tell about the location of Pare diocese, what it looks like, smelled like, felt like. . .do you remember your first impressions? >>Beautiful? Overwhelming? Exciting? ??? >>Carol, is this white truck your transport truck? To me it looks like a humanitarian relief vehicle, owned by Action by Churches Together, of which the ELCA is a member agency
Welcome to Mramba Parish! >>who is Mramba Parish? >> may want to give some detail about the nature of our relationship with them >>say more about this picture if you like
>>more about Mramba parish >>could tell about worship style, aspects that surprised you, aspects that delighted you
This might be a good place to convey a message from Mramba to the audience. . .what would Mramba parish want to say to St. John’s???? >>Pastor Rachel’s story about people and not money >>might be a good time to talk about East African hospitality
>>could talk more about the partnership, the windows, etc. >>say more about this picture
>>is this the offering? Can you say more? >>wrap up your Mramba Parish worship comments with this slide.
Hospitality, baby!!! >>holy guacamole, is this how you were escorted to your homestay?? Definitely worth saying more about this picture!! >>briefly describe homestay
>>general comments and impressions about the food you ate >>can be about the home stay food and also restaurant food >>if you want, could tie it back into the notion of hospitality
A primary curiosity of any traveler is the bathroom situation. Let us just say that we were able to take care of business fairly comfortably. >>if you like, give a general overview of the facilities – you know people are wondering!
Gonja Hospital administrators share with us their systems for providing prevention and care. >>may want to mention the Paliative care project, in partnership with the state of Iowa >>share a little about Gonja Hosp.
>>say a little bit about Gonja Hosp
>> I like this! What does it mean? >>don’t worry if you don’t know what this means, just talk about how you saw signs like these all over and how they are used as a way of prevention through public health education; important to use pictures as well as words so the communication can transcend illiteracy (although this one has a lot of words, but you know) >>this one looks like an HIV/AIDS prevention effort
Of course the best health care is preventative health care, so keeping track of children’s weight is an important way to measure proper growth and to detect health problems before they get serious. >>more about this pic
We also spent some time as tourists. One tourism “must do” is a visit with the Masaii People. >>say more about this picture
>>picture of the KNCU (Kilimanjaro Native Coffee Union) Kahawa Shamba – coffee farmers’ ecotourism program >>this “hotel cabin” has modern ammenities to host ecotourists, yet it looks like an authentic home that would have been built on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro for centuries >>the ecotourism program helps coffee farmers to diversify their income and also gives them a way to share their indigenous way of life with visitors >>hard manual labor of coffee growing; fair trad coffee, Tanzania Jubilee available at St. John’s, etc >>their coffee is sold here at St. John’s, Tanzanian Jubilee
While in Arusha, we stayed in a modern hotel, The Impala. The Tanzanian hospitality lives in the city too as Tanzanians take much pride in ensuring comfort for their visitors. >>say more about this picture
Safari! You simply cannot go to Tanzania without going on Safari. It is a source of great pride to the local people, indeed the crown jewel of the East African experience -- second to the richness of human hospitality of course.
>>say a little more about the Safari
Swahili lore says that if a visitor sees the top of Mount Kilimajaro – which is usually shrouded in cloud – the guest is destined to return. We look forward to a long and beautiful relationship with Mramba Parish, in Pare Diocese. >>mention the geographic proximity of Pare and Kili >>if you like, say more about this pic
We are excited about this companion synod ministry and we need YOU to join us! >> list some ways people can be involved in support Pray Cash donations to cover costs of partnership – (give examples of costs) $1000 per year towards missionary sponsorship Hosting a Tanzanian guest in home Joining a delegation to Tanzania -- talk about next delegation Sponsoring someone else on a delegation to Tanzania ELCA Hunger Program (the quarter boxes) Hospice Kits Other?
