Editor's Notes
The social reader and prospects for development of reading on digital platforms from the experiments of the Germán Sánchez Ruipérez Foundation
is the provisional title of my Phd Thesis.
This research start in 2012 and (with a big hope) will be finished in March 2017
Our theoretical frameworl start from the study of the impact of tecnology in our daily lives.
The technological evolution that has occurred since at least three decades generated impact on more or less all the social, political and economic structures from developed societies.
The incorporation of electronic devices in our daily lives changed our way to study, to work, to consume,to communicate, and of course, the way we read.
The relation between books and technology is not a recent phenomenon. Researchers and tecnological companies has always tried to use the new resources to provide new possibilities for Reading.
For exemplo the Project Gotemberg, a Project that starts in 1971.
And the first ereaders called Softbook and Rocktbook in early 98
However, despite of this experiences, it was only in 2010 that this scenario began to really go through an significant change.
The launch of the iPad promoted the digital reading like no one else did. And most important, introduces new features to the reading process, that became more dinamic and social.
For the elaboration of this doctoral thesis we start from three hypothesis
The social reader has specific caracteristics.
Theses caracteristics require an specific training.
Reading research requires more than never an multisciplinary and integrative perspective. Where different groups of researchers may work together. Like a puzzle.
Libraries have the capacity to serve as an ideal research center for investigate this kind of phenomenon.
Our main gols is to Study the evolution of the digital reading in Spain
And Proof the efficiency of the Germán Sánchez Ruipérez investigations
In this study we used different types of methodology.
Bibliographic Analysis
Content Analysis
Analysis of Reading devices and Reading Apps
Interviews
Looking for a greater efficiency, the thesis was divided into four parts.
The first part corresponds to the study of the new features of digital reading. More specifically, the study of the evolution of reading devices and reading apps.
The second part covered the overview of reading research. An in-depth analysis of major publications on this phenomenon. Starting from the classical studies to the latest studies, already focused on social reader.
The third part corresponded to the analysis of the Territorio Ebook Program.
Meanwhile, the fourth part corresponded to a study result from the contrast between Territorio Ebook research and others with same characteristics conducted around the world.
Just to clarify a little bit our research context:
Since it is a study made it in Spain it was decided that the research would start from the Spanish scenario. More precisely, the results of the investigation carried out by German Sanchez Ruiperez Foundation, through its Territorio Ebook program.
These investigations had the aim of analyse the impact of the use of electronic devices for reading.
Analyzing the reading phenomenon in different environments like the library, the university o school, or even at home
The Program was divided in six Project. Where were investigated different types of readers, devices or books
Now we highlight some of the results already found
We found in this analysis not only changes caused directly in the reading process. But throughout the whole reader journey. Since the discovery to the coments after read..
We highlight the growth of specialized platforms in social reading.
In relation to the impact generated by electronic devices on reading research.
We highlight this chart, which demonstrates a considerable increase in the number of publications on this subject. Especially since the launch of the iPad in 2010.
As well as the evolution of the number of authors.
About the results of the Territorio Ebook program it was possible to observe two positive factors.
The importance of training. The group subject to the training process during the research were better adapted to this kind of reading.
This fact was recognized even among the readers. As we see in this chart
After comparing the results of Territorio Ebook and others international investigations context we could notice that presence of researchs from different areas make the results much more interesting and complete.
As well as the involvemente of diferente groups, like the authors. It is a importante group in the book chain but is almost never analyse.
And another important result was the verification of the importance of study the readers in their reading enviroments.
That can be the library or at home. This kind of methodology seems to produce more realistic results.
Now we are in the last four month af the investigation. But we still have some work to do, like a series of interviews with the researchers, the analysis, the review. And finally the conclusion!
