Saint Ann Clinic provided primary healthcare services and referrals to low-income individuals
and families, who lived at the national poverty level, did not have a private physician and did
not have medical insurance, Medicaid or Medicare (1997-2014). Recently they received
Federal funding to become a Federally Qualified Healthcare Clinic and changed their name to
the Wabash Valley Health Center (WVHC) in 2014.

Service Learning Aspects
“This project has helped me gain a better understanding of clinical exercise …. Working at St. Ann’s Clinic
helped me see that I would love to continue doing in the future.”
“I feel as though my confidence in my skills have significantly increased as well. As a whole, I have
become a better clinician due to my experience at St. Ann's Clinic… The differences has shown me how
to transform my treatments for all different types of patients.”
“I grew not only as a student, but as a person. … forcing me to learn the material, and it gave me a chance to apply it and
practice it in a clinical setting instead of a classroom…this helped me grow as a student.”
“I figured most of them were coming in to get drugs… I quickly realized that the patients that visit St. Ann's are some of the
most respectful, caring, and thankful people I have ever worked with. ”
Without this project the exercise patients would not be able to access any rehabilitation services. The cost savings is a
huge factor for many of the health center's patients who continue to lack health insurance, or find themselves with high
deductibles.
Student Reflections
The experience of being the professional is something that no one can learn while sitting in a classroom. This experience taught
me how to better present myself to others, how to speak professionally, and how to stay accountable for myself when someone
else (the client) is depending on me.”
“This project has been one of my best experiences at Indiana State. It was a great idea to implement this program into
exercise science.”
“… helped me develop empathy, respect, appreciation, and many other great qualities.”
“… I felt a sense of accomplishment because I knew I was helping someone feel better about themselves and motivating
them to make better physical choices.”
Patient Perspective
“This program has been a life changer… I sincerely hope
that it carries forward well into the future.”
“…they have helped me greatly.”
“…show caring skills to patients.”
“I would never be able to make the payments for the therapy I get here…
the quality of care that I get here is amazing.”
