3. MPHIL RESEARCH TOPIC:
“Correlation of biochemical constituents of seminal plasma with semen quality and fertility status of
lohi rams”
Summary of Research;
The current study was conducted to determine the level of some major biochemical constituents in seminal
plasma of Lohi rams and to determine correlation of semen physical and biochemical constituents among
each other and with the fertility status. For this purpose, six mature healthy Lohi rams were selected from
the sheep herd maintained at Livestock Production Research Institute Bahadurnagar, Okara.
Physical parameters such as volume, mass motility, motility percentage, sperm concentration and live dead
ratio were highly positively significantly (P<0.01) correlated to scrotum circumference, conception rate,
lambing rate and other fertility characteristics.
The concentrations of K, Zn, P and total proteins were also positively correlated to fertility characters.
Concentration of P was not significantly correlated to reproductive disorders. The concentrations of Na, Mg
and Cu were negatively correlated to fertility characteristics. Plasma droplet abnormalities showed no
significant correlation to fertility traits.
The correlation among biochemical parameters like Na, K, Zn, P and total proteins concentration showed
significant correlation among them. Concentration of K, Zn, P and seminal plasma total proteins showed
positive significant correlation to sperm concentration and other fertility characteristics whereas others were
negatively correlated. Sperm morphological abnormalities were also significantly correlated to biochemical
parameters. Live dead ratio was positively significantly correlated to K, Zn, P, proteins and negatively with
Na, Mg and Cu.
