OF A SHIP
Recycling takes place after 25-30
years of service or when repairs
cannot be financially justified.1
The economic lifespan of an oil
tanker has historically been 25
years, although more recently this
has dropped closer to 20 years.
Different tanker companies operate
with their own asset depreciation
policies, ranging from 18 to 25
years .2

3. MV Stellar Banner. Sustained bow damage, took water and developed list to starboard in the South Atlantic Ocean
36 miles N of Ilha de Santana, Maranhao, Brazil on 24/02/20. Master grounded the vessel on a sand bar to prevent sinking.
Refloated on 03/06/20 and towed to deeper water for inspection. Subsequently declared as constructive total loss and scuttled.
Sank, wreck, accident,

7. SHIP RECYCLING – TYPICAL ENDING
Controversial industries.
China ban import of foreign ship for
recycling effective December 2018 to
protect environment from heavily
pollutant such as heavy metals, oil and
other toxic substances.4
Main ship graveyard is the Indian
Subcontinent, main countries are
India, Bangladesh, Pakistan. Apart
from pollution is the concern of labor
condition and worker safety.5

8. SHIPS
DISMANTLED
WORLDWIDE IN
2019
According to data released today
by the NGO Shipbreaking
Platform, 674 ocean-going
commercial ships and offshore
units were sold to the scrap yards
in 2019. Of these vessels, 469
large tankers, bulkers, floating
platforms, cargo- and passenger
ships were broken down on only
three beaches in Bangladesh,
India and Pakistan, amounting to
near 90% of the gross tonnage
dismantled globally.6
