6. Patricia and Robin Pickard met on the Wirral in Cheshire where Robin was a research chemist. They moved to North
Essex in the mid-1960s, settling in Henham, later moving to Ashdon in 1988 to be closer to the Church Street Gallery,
Saffron Walden, which Pat established in 1983.
The Gallery was fired by Pat’s love of art and antiques, and opened with an exhibition of the works of Edward Bawden
(1903-1989), who became a personal friend. Edward designed a logo for the Gallery, promotional material and Christmas
cards, and the Gallery staged further exhibitions of his work and those of his son Richard.
In April 1987, the Gallery staged the first UK solo exhibition for Icelandic artist Karolina Larusdottir (1944-2019) who also
became a close friend.
The Church Street Gallery closed in 1990, however, Pat continued to pursue her love of the arts, successfully being
awarded a BA and then an MA by Anglia University. During their retirement, both Pat and Robin derived great pleasure
from their personal art collection, highlights from which are included in this auction.
The following thirteen lots are from the estate of Robin and Patricia Pickard. A further twenty-five lots from the estate
are to be sold by Sworders in the Modern British and 20th Century Art Sale Part 2, a timed online auction running from
9 October - 1 November 2020 .

LOTS 33-44A
PROPERTY FROM THE ESTATE OF LUCY WERTHEIM (1882-1971)
The following fourteen lots belonged to the well-known art dealer and collector, Lucy Wertheim, and have remained with her family by descent.
Wertheim established her first gallery in Mayfair in 1930 after a decade of engagement with art, principally as a collector. She championed many
young British artists, including Henry Moore, Cedric Morris and, in the year prior to his tragic early death, Christopher Wood. Through her career,
she had galleries in Derbyshire, London and Brighton where she settled. She provided welcome support to many artists who we know well today.
Among her protégés were Phelan Gibb and Kenneth Hall, whose work she retained as part of her personal collection. The Towner Art Gallery,
Eastbourne will be celebrating her life with a forthcoming exhibition ‘Lucy Wertheim, Patron, Collector and Gallerist’ in 2022.

signed l.r., oil on canvas
45.5 x 55cm
£15,000 - 20,000
Provenance: Sotheby’s London, 26 September 1984, lot 274.
Cedric Morris had an enduring interest in landscape painting stretching
back to his early years as a painter. Before the late 1920s, although
interested in nature, he was yet to develop his passion for horticulture
and so his output was varied in its scope and comprised of many
portraits, landscapes and also birds. He lived for two years between
1918 and 1920 in Newlyn, and then along with his partner Lett Haines
moved more permanently to Paris towards the end of 1920, using
it as a base for the majority of the decade to come. From here, he
could travel widely and he spent the summers throughout Europe
in pursuit of new landscapes for inspiration. He spent time in Italy,
the Dordogne, and Normandy where Margaret Morris, wife of the
colourist J D Fergusson held her summer school. Like many artists,
he was drawn to the south of France, in particular to the vallée
de l’Ouvèze, where he remarked of his work there: ‘I think the
landscapes are the best I have ever done, rather like the Newlyn
ones, the colour suits me’ (Hugh St. Clair, ‘A Lesson in Art and
Life’ Pimpernel Press Ltd., 1919, p.48).
In his Mediterranean works we can see a difference in colours
as Cedric responds to the drier landscape - the heavy, rich
greens and browns that saturate his British and Welsh views are
still present, but toned more sparsely amongst ochres, Naples
yellow and raw umbers, punctuated with accents of pale blues
and pinkish hues. In our picture we can feel the difference in
climate, the dry arid sandy soil and rocks of the foreground
and the lighter-coloured olive trees beyond. The work is typical
of his painting style - richly impastoed, with clearly defined
brush strokes applied in varying angles across the surface. The
work is impressionistic; he manages in a few gestural stokes to
depict a startling variety of trees and shrubs, indicating his huge
appreciation of the variety of flora around him.

Still Life with a Gargoyle, circa 1981
signed upside down u.l., titled verso, pen and ink, watercolour and gouache
56 x 78.5cm
£3,000 - 5,000
Provenance: Sir David Tang, Hong Kong.
The dark colours and bold juxtaposition of foreground subjects can be found in several works executed in the early 1980s - a period when
Piper experimented with new compositions, drawing from his existing painting and work in other media, such as photography and ceramics.
The sculpted head relates to similar female forms found notably in ‘Girl’s head with flowers’ (1981) and ‘A Window at North Moreton’ (1982),
which both introduce a woman’s face into the artist’s more familiar subject matter. Similar dog-like gargoyles appear in one of Piper’s
photographs now held at the Tate Gallery, (ref: TGA 8728/1/21/115), while the background figures are drawn from a large screenprint,
‘Eye and Camera: Blue to Ochre’ (c.1977), also at the Tate. For further details and illustration of related work in this period, see D F Jenkins
and H Fowler-Wright, ‘The Art of John Piper’ (Unicorn/Portland Gallery: 2016, pp.397-400).

to me is a battle about figuration verbally and in letters with my great friend Roger Hilton. At that time in Leeds I had attempted to use a kind
of ‘figure’ shape either horizontally or vertically but it had to have no resemblance to Picasso figure distortion. Remember Moore’s reclining
figures were dominating British Sculpture. I used the rythm [sic] I liked the linear drawing that finished up with chevron used for structural
reasons and very often a submerged ripple delight, sensuality being a very important feeling on top of a good structure. That’s all this Sunday
morning, Terry’.

My mother, Pamela Chard, née Bloomfield
(1926-2003) won a scholarship to Chelsea School
of Art when she was seventeen, in the mid-1940s.
My father, William Chard (b.1923), after a spell in
prison for six months as a conscientious objector,
arrived at Chelsea a year after her. They had
glimpsed each other at the art school, but actually
first met at the Redfern Gallery in Cork Street, and
as soon as it became possible for foreigners to visit
Europe in the wake of the Second World War, the
two of them hitch-hiked around France together.
Pamela had been educated in convent schools,
but the liberatory atmosphere of art school - and
no doubt her affection for my father, who was
agnostic - led her to question her faith for the
first time, and prompted her to experiment with
a wide range of media and techniques. Her work
was mainly figurative, and she had a particular
penchant and talent for drawing, cultivating an
easy, flowing line. An enviable talent of hers was
the ability to produce a rapid thumbnail sketch of
a painting, which would seize the principal lines of
the composition in a lively, dynamic way.
William, at art school, produced a number of large paintings that were executed in life drawing
classes - mainly of female nudes - and some figurative or semi-figurative paintings that took as
subject-matter a scene, such as figures at a wedding, and used these to explore patterns and
play of colour. He was experimenting with sculpture and was also making reliefs - an art form
with which he continued to engage throughout his life.
When she was 21 or 22, Pamela, still a student, left her parents’ home to marry William, and
they moved into a small flat in Chelsea. Pamela described their life there as impoverished, but
socially delightful, since friends from among their fellow-students, lecturers and other artists
and intellectuals who happened to be around at the time, would often call by. A particular
friend of my mother was Marie Parmeter (some of whose work is included in this sale).
Other friends were Prunella Clough (1919-99), the sculptor Shelley Fausset (1920-94),
who worked as Henry Moore’s assistant from 1946 to 1948, and the painter and sculptor
John Lavrin, who married Suncana, the daughter of the well-known Croatian sculptor Ivan
Meštrović, and worked as an assistant for him.
Of the artists who taught William and Pamela, those whom they mentioned most often
were Henry Moore (1898-1986), Ceri Richards (1903-1971) and the painter Vivian Pitchforth
(1895-1982), of whom William spoke especially warmly, having valued Pitchforth’s ability to
help him define what he wished to achieve in his painting.
After finishing their degrees, William and Pamela went to Bristol to do a teacher training
course. William had been offered part-time teaching at Chelsea, and was very tempted to
rely on this and on selling work, but financial caution prevailed. They both took up a series
of teaching jobs in London, and exhibited in group exhibitions: for example, in the ‘open
submission’ shows of the London Group. From stories that they told of this period, their life
continued to have a fairly bohemian, free and easy flavour, even after I was born at the end of
1955 and my brother in 1959.
Around this time, William began to paint abstract works that made use of oil paint (usually on
wood), but that were in some ways more reliefs than paintings: he often thickened the paint
with filler, and he would make use of nails, hammered into the wood to different depths, and
of found objects, such as a chair seat. Pamela, by the mid-1960s, was painting mainly portraits
and landscapes - perhaps drawn towards the latter by her intense passion for gardening -
although she also produced more quirky jeux d’esprit in her drawings and prints.
In 1965, William took a job as the head of a foundation course at Barnet College of Further
Education, where he remained until his retirement. My parents moved to Finchley, choosing
to live there because it was an area in which they could afford a house with plenty of studio
space. They acquired an etching press, and took classes in etching, producing a number of
inventive and playful prints. My father exhibited works at the Drian Gallery and the Comedy
Gallery. Pamela took up part-time adult teaching, initially for the local authority; much later,
when her classes were axed by Barnet Borough Council, her students were so incensed that
they set up their own collective, Studio N3, and she continued to teach there until her final
illness.
In the 1960s, both my parents became interested in developments in graphic design. In
William’s case, this interest was manifested in his use of blocks of clear, bright colour and
geometric shapes, and by the early 1970s, he started to work with acrylic paint. He was
entertained by the more witty and ludic forms of Pop Art; although none of his works could be
situated within this genre, he enjoyed inventing titles with a ‘pop’ flavour, such as ‘Whoosh!’.
He and Pamela warmed to Arte Povera, although in his use of found objects he was less
interested in exploring the relation between the ‘natural’ and the ‘artificial’ than proponents
of that movement were: rather, he liked to assemble arrays of plastic objects, such as bottle
tops, and to bring their improbably saturated colours into proximity with each other. He also
increasingly focused on collage as a way of pursuing his interest in effects of colour.
During the 1970s, Pamela became involved with the local branch of the Arts Council of
Great Britain; by the 1980s, she was running a small Arts Council gallery in Totteridge. She
continued to paint until her final illness. William continued to paint and make objects until he
entered a nursing home at the end of 2018.
While researching for this essay, I found a clipping from a local paper of a review by Ray Rushton
of a joint show by my parents at St Mary’s Arts Centre, Colchester - I think from the 1970s.
He says of my mother: ‘like all expressionists, Pamela Chard is…hit and miss in composition,
wild in colour and instant [sic] inspirational in feeling’. Another review, by Margaret Richards,
from the Barnet Press of 1 July 1977, considering an exhibition by William at a local gallery,
discerns in his paintings ‘a kind of tipsy gaiety, with nothing quite what it seems at first glance’.

Gabriel Summers, painter, etcher and dealer-researcher, was born in Dorset, the grandson of the artists Gerald and Nora Summers.
Summers’ interest in art was encouraged as a child and he won an art scholarship to Canford School, 1975-80, where he was taught
by Robin J Noscoe. He graduated in the history of art at Reading University, 1980-83 and gained his masters in that subject at the
Courtauld Institute, 1983-84, concentrating on British romantic art, a continuing interest. In 1990, Summers was featured in the
episode ‘In Search of Bohemia’, part of the BBC television ‘Abroad in Britain’ series, with Jonathan Meades. Group shows included
‘Nudes for St Valentine’, Bartley Drey Gallery, 1996; ‘Contemporary British Art’, The Millinery Works, 2003; and ‘Little Venice Drawing

‘Alien Baby’
glazed ceramic, 2008, stamped and numbered 11 to the reverse, from an edition of 12
27 x 17cm
£4,000 - 6,000
Provenance: This work was given by the artist to one of the nurses featured in the programme.
‘Alien Baby’ was created during his time making the BAFTA nominated ‘Rites of Passage’, a four episode series exploring the topics of Death,
Marriage, Birth and Coming of Age. Perry travelled the world exploring rituals across different cultures before returning home to England, to
discuss his findings with British families, drawing parallels with seminal moments in their own lives and helping to devise secular rituals to help
them make sense of the landmark moments they were experiencing.
He described witnessing the slow motion modern miracle that sees the babies being nurtured into the world by the dedicated team of nurses
who help them survive and thrive against all odds. He sees the nurses as the crew of a spaceship, employing modern technology with a
sympathetic touch, the twinkling lights of the monitors reminiscent of the light-up controls of the flight deck of a spaceship. Inspired by this
cosmic scene and believing there to be a need for the NHS to be ritualised as one of the pillars of modern society, Grayson produced a range
of 12 ‘Alien Babies’, each a celebration of the NHS, the technology and, above all, the humanity of the neonatal nurses. The works, each
unique and executed in pottery with a metallic gilt glaze, were gifted by the artist to every member of the neonatal team at the Broomfield,
as well as to the couples featured in the show. He states ‘each sculpture represents the spirit of all the little lives bought into the earth by the
nursing team’.
