sturdy, braced legs with a hogged mane
on its thick curved neck, its head raised
with mouth open in a whinny, revealing
rows of teeth below flaring nostrils and
bulging eyes, the ears alertly pricked, its
short upright tail tied ending in a knot,

The present lot demonstrates the major principles
of the Buddhist religion. Shakyamuni is portrayed
emaciated after a long period of fasting in a quest
to attain enlightenment. In the early phases of his
religious quest, he was convinced that a person
living in wealth and luxury would not be able to
see things in the right perspective, so in an attempt
to reach enlightenment, the Buddha tried multiple
paths, one of which was fasting. However, he
found that his entire experience was spent thinking
about his body’s needs, ultimately posing so much
of a distraction that he was unable to engage in
true spiritual thought. Shakyamuni concluded that
extreme self-denial or exaggerated self-mortification
is not the path to enlightenment, and thus began
to encourage others to follow a middle way, which
became a central tenet of Buddhism.

John James Sheridan was born on Achill Island, off the west coast of Co Mayo, Ireland, in
1881, the son of a farmer. It is believed he travelled to Shanghai in approximately 1903/04
where his profession is listed as Wine Merchant.
In December 1922, John married Anna Dobershansky (b.1897) She was the daughter of a
Russian nobleman - who was involved as an accountant in the building of the Trans-Siberian
Railway - and it is believed that the
couple enjoyed being part of Shanghai’s
‘High Society’ at that time. They had four sons
and lived together in Shanghai until John died
of acute appendicitis in 1936.
After her husband’s death, Anna remained in China, later being interned in the Lunghua
Civilian Assembly Centre there - more commonly known as a Japanese internment camp, it
was the subject of the film ‘Empire of the Sun’ written by J G Ballard. On her release from the
camp, she left for Ireland with all her possessions in three large trunks. Following Anna’s death
in 1964, the items remained in the trunks, the majority of which the vendor has now decided
to sell in the hope that someone else may derive pleasure from them.

Kairakuen was the official kiln of the Daimyo (provincial lord) of Kii (modern-day Wakayama prefecture),
who was a member of the ruling Tokugawa family. In response to the revival of interest in Chinese art
during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, many of the kiln’s wares imitated Chinese ceramics - in
this example, the Fahua ware of the Ming dynasty.

Tsuyoshi Mishima, who worked under
the name of Go Mishima, was one of the
first contemporary gay artists in Japan. He
contributed to ‘Barazoku’ (The Rose Tribe),
the first gay magazine published by Daini
Shobo in Tokyo in 1971. In 1974, Mishima
founded his own gay magazine called ‘Sabu’.
He created a series of 24 lithograph portraits
titled ‘Mishima Go Book of Young Men’.
