From the estate of a Yorkshire gentleman, Cedric Gillson, this Jaguar was first registered on 1 September 1958, an original UK right-hand drive car.
This vehicle was purchased in 1989 as a restoration project, completed by the vendor and subsequently garaged for its entire ownership. The vehicle
comes with an extensive folder of invoices and receipts. The last recorded MOT is dated 25 March 2011, and from the odometer reading, has only
covered 50 miles since, despite being regularly run and driven short distances. This car was extensively restored in the late 1980s to a very high
standard, in the main by Rawdon Restorations, Idle, Bradford, originally white, resprayed Carmen red and finished with tan leather seats and a
Wilton carpet interior. The car runs and drives beautifully and the condition remains exceptional both inside and out.

From the estate of a Yorkshire gentleman, Cedric Gillson, the Mini V5 records the first registration as 1 January 1970. This is a very pretty, original UK
right-hand drive car and was purchased by the vendor on 3 November 2006. The car has been fully restored and has a Heritage Certificate advising
the date of dispatch as 31 January 1969 to a dealership ‘Stewart & Arden Ltd, Acton’. The vehicle was last MOT’d on 24 April 2015 covering only
15 miles in the interim. We understand that the car has been regularly run and garaged for its entire ownership, remaining in exceptional condition in

Robert Prenzel (1866-1941)
Robert Prenzel was born in 1866 in the Prussian town
of Kittliztreben, in present-day Poland. After a four-year
apprenticeship, further studies at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf,
and another four years of work experience around Europe, he
emigrated to Australia at the age of 22. Trained in the classical
European styles, he went on to define Australian craft and
design throughout the first quarter of the 20th century.
Basing himself in Melbourne from 1888, Prenzel’s work was
pivotal to the movement and epoch of ‘Marvellous Melbourne’.
In the early 1900s, he predominantly produced commissioned
works for churches and public spaces in Continental, rococo
and baroque styles, before opening his own furniture workshop
on Toorak Road in central Melbourne in 1910. From there,
Prenzel came to pioneer the secessionist movement of Australian
woodcarving, known as Gum Nut Art Nouveau.
Using predominantly native timbers, Prenzel produced everything
from pictorial wall plaques to longcase clocks. Developing a
unique artistic style, his works combined the vogue of European
Art Nouveau with carved motifs of Australian flora and fauna,
the majority of which were based on paintings, descriptive
texts and photographs by his contemporaries. Through the
use of this two-dimensional imagery, Prenzel often allowed for
individual interpretations and imaginations of his subject matter,
introducing minor changes and alterations to each three-
dimensional rendering, giving each its unique characteristics.
Prenzel’s work was phenomenally well received by his
contemporaries, both in Australia and abroad. Throughout his
career, he championed Australian flora and fauna, founding a
botanical garden in South Melbourne and serving as an advisor
on the subject to the Commonwealth government. However,
his endeavours were cut short by the anti-German sentiments of
the post-World War I era, eventually forcing him into retirement
during the mid-1920s. In spite of this, he continued carving and
working from his home in Black Rock until his death in 1941.
Lot 15 shows Prenzel’s most recognised designs from the peak
of his career. ‘Woman with a Pipe’ and ‘The Laughing Man’,
after the original photograph by Henry King, were among his
most frequent and celebrated subject matter, both as small
embellishments and as standalone portrait carvings. Having been
dismounted from their original backboards, these works are
indicative of the intricacy and skill of Prenzel’s carvings.

'The North American Indian', is one of the most expensive undertakings in the history of book production and one of the most comprehensive
ethnographic records of the native tribes of North America, or of any aboriginal people.
'The North American Indian' took sixteen years longer to complete than projected and exceeded its budget by nearly $1.4 million. Curtis's immense
work contains one of the largest visual records of Native Americans in existence, produced in lavish style under the patronage of J Pierpont Morgan.
Edward Sheriff Curtis was born in White Water, Wisconsin, in 1868, but his great interest in American Indians developed after his family moved
to Minnesota. Here, Curtis lived near the Chippewa, Menominee, and Winnebago tribes. Through instruction manuals available at the time, the
teenage Curtis built crude cameras and taught himself the rudiments of photography. In 1887, the Curtis family moved to Washington Territory
in order to find a more temperate climate for Curtis's ailing father. There Edward Curtis encountered many of the Native American tribes of the
Pacific Northwest. The sudden death of his father left Curtis responsible for the family, and he provided for them by farming, fishing, digging clams
and doing chores for neighbours. Throughout this time, Curtis continued to hone his photographic skills and, in 1891, purchased a share in a
photographic studio for $150. This venture lasted less than a year, but Curtis soon formed a partnership with Thomas Guptill to build a photographic
studio in Seattle.
The process of making photogravures was developed in the 1850s to produce a photographic image from an engraving plate. Once a photograph
is exposed, a glass transparency is made from the negative. A series of chemical transfers to a copper plate produces an etched copper plate of the
original photographic image.
From 1896 to 1930, Curtis photographed every major Native American tribe west of the Mississippi, taking over 40,000 negatives of 80 tribes.
Curtis selected just one twentieth of his graphic record to represent his artistic vision of North American tribes.

These full-size working drawings by the artist George Daniels (1854-1940) were all made for stained glass windows dating from the 1920s and
1930s, which were, in part, designed by the architect Frederick Charles Eden FSA FRIBA (1864-1944). Although nominally the work of F C Eden - who
secured the commissions and was responsible for the execution of the designs - the windows were actually the result of a collaborative process, in
which George Daniels’ cartoons were an essential component. Eden’s contribution was limited to drawing initial sketches and creating the ornamental
border patterns; all the figure-drawing – as in this collection of cartoons – was Daniels’ work.

William Lawson (1892-1946) was the first
managing director and chief designer of
Faith Craft-Works (later Faith Craft), which
was based in St Albans. The enterprise
came into being in the mid-1920s, when
the Society of the Faith decided to add a
non-profit-making enterprise specialising
in church art to its existing publishing arm,
Faith Press. Lawson worked in a style that
harked back to the Middle Ages.

ART DECO FURNITURE AND TRAVEL POSTERS

Lawrie Gatehouse (1943-2020) was an avid collector of Art Deco and posters, drawn to the printed medium
through his primary love of the golden age of steam and travel.
In his professional life, Lawrie was a mechanical engineer who founded Process Systems International,
a successful engineering firm in Northampton in 1992. Another of his lifelong passions was drag racing,
after getting hooked at the Blackbushe DragFest in 1964. He consequently spent over 50 years committed
to the sport.
His wife, Judith remembers trips to auctions and fairs and the passion he had for all works Art Deco. Ahead
of his collection being offered to the next generation of avid collector, Judith shares with us her memories
of a fascinating life with her late husband...
I first met Lawrie in February 1998 and he told me that he had the ‘collecting bug’ for antiques from the
Art Deco period. He called it a hobby, but I soon realised that for him it was an absolute passion, and it
became his life’s work.
Lawrie introduced me to a world I hadn’t experienced before. We would visit Art Deco fairs all over the
country. Lawrie enjoyed meeting the stallholders and fellow collectors where he learned and shared
knowledge about the artefacts on sale. He recognised the hard work and commitment that went into
the setting up a stall and he only collected pieces that he felt were absolutely true and authentic to the
Art Deco period.
He loved the innovative streamlined style, the bright colours and the flamboyance of the age. But, above all, he admired the skill and exquisite
craftsmanship - the like of which he felt would not be seen again.
Lawrie’s collection of 1920’s posters showed his engineering background and his enjoyment of travel. He had an extensive knowledge of cars, boats
and planes but I believe his love for anything with an engine came second to his love of Art Deco.
Lawrie was an avid reader and he studied countless books about the leading designers of that time.
Many hours were spent talking about the hand painted porcelain Lawrie painstakingly collected and he was thrilled if he could find some new pieces
thus enabling him to complete a set.
I feel privileged to have shared a very happy life with Lawrie and to have met some lovely people along the way from the world of Art Deco. I hope
those of you who procure even a small part of his collection, will enjoy it as much as he did.
