3. Where images of criminals come
from
Images of criminals come from a variety of sources:
- Parents
- Church
- how crime is depicted on TV and in other media
- whether one has had a family member or friend who has
turned to crime
- whether one has committed a criminal offence oneself
- whether one has been a victim of crime
4. Criminal Acts
An action may be defined as a crime for one of
three
reasons:
(a) society thinks it is morally wrong
(b) it interferes with the rights of another person
(c) society could not function properly unless it was considered to be
wrong and people who did it were punished
5. CRIME
1. A crime is a serious offence, an act that’s breaks
the law; illegal acts
2. A crime is an act which a government or other
authority has declared it to be against the law.
OR
3. A crime is a conduct or action, event prohibited
by law
6. When people commit
crimes….
► The law is enforced by the police who have the
power to arrest and charge those who break it
► The offender may be prosecuted by the state by
any other legally empowered authority, or in some cases
by a private individual
► Judgement and sentencing are carried out by a court of law
► A prison service and other agencies ensure that
sentences are carried out. Is it referred to the penal system
7. The Qld Police
# Commenced operations on January 1, 1864.
# Was divided into Metropolitan Police, Rural Police,
Water Police and Native Police.
# First woman police officers were appointed in 1931.
# The Qld Police Force became known as the
Queensland Police Service with the passing of
the new Police Act in 1990.
# New Motto: “With Honour We Serve”
8. First Female

9. Commonwealth Police
# Was formed in 1960.
# Became known as the Australian Federal Police in
1979.
# They deal with many national issues such as:
- Terrorism
- E-Crime
- Internet scams
- People smuggling
- Environmental crime
- Drugs
- Major Fraud
