This new system will be powered by Google, will provide Gmail to our school, and a suite of other Google products, which will enable our organization to better communicate, share, and collaborate.Gmail is Google's web-based email program, which provides users with over 6 gigabytes of storage, fast Google search, and powerful spam protection. As part of Google Apps for Education, email addresses can be @yourschool.edu rather than @gmail.com.Google Talk is a clean, easy-to-use application for instant messaging and voice calls using computers. Google’s Chat Network lets people send and receive instant messages with friends, family, and colleagues. They can exchange real time notes and emoticons with anyone on the network using Google properties (i.e. Gmail, iGoogle, orkut, Google Talk, Google+) or a third-party client. We will be using Google Chat in our school system and we will start using it at our school next week. You will need to set up a Google Account, tomorrow. You can use an existing one or create a new one. During your planning period, you may want to communicate face to face with your colleagues, and you can do that by using the free voice and video chat feature. To start using the voice and video chatting, you will need to download the voice and video chat plug-in. Instructions1Download and install the Google voice and video chatplugin (see Resources). A common mistake people often make is to download the Google video chat plugin but forget to install the plugin, so make sure install the video chat plugin after it has downloaded.2After you've installed the Google video chat plugin, you should be prompted to restart your browser.3Once you have restarted your browser, log into Gmail. You and your friend should now appear with a video camcorder icon by your names instead of the green dot. (Make sure you are not invisible). The camcorder icon means you are ready to video chat.4Mouse over your friend's name. A menu should appear to the right of the mouse showing their name and options of what you can do with them (like email, chat and video chat).5Select "Start video Chat." Your friend should see a chat window pop up with a video and hear chiming/ringing. You have now initiated a Google video chat with your friend. To start a group chat, follow these steps:Start a chat with a single person in your Chat list.Once you've started the chat, click the person icon at the top of the chat window.In the field labeled 'Add people to this chat', enter the names of the contacts you want to add to your group chat.To end your chat, click the X at the corner of the chat window. Others in the group chat will get a message saying that you've left the conversation. If you want to rejoin, you'll need to be invited back by a contact who's still in the group chat. If you’re using Gmail and want to start a group chat with a group of contacts you’re currently communicating with on an email thread, you can simply click the double chat bubble icon next to People on the right side of your Gmail page. This will start a Chat lobby where you can see who’s available for your group chat. At that time, you can decide whether to add or remove participants.
