Prime Minister Mahathir defeated his former protege Najib Razak in elections in May. Mahathir released Anwar Ibrahim from jail and rejected an investigation by the Attorney General into allegations that Razak and his inner circle had stolen money from a state investment fund to buy luxury goods. The United Malays National Organization political party, which had been dominant in Malaysian politics, supported Razak.
