Name of the teacher : Sumi.S Period :
Name of the school : Time :
Standard : x Date :
Subject : Mathematics Strength:
Unit : Solids Average age :15+
Topic : pyramids
ANALYSIS OF THE CONCEPT
1. Name : pyramids
2. Attributes
1) Essential attributes :1) pyramids have one base and more than one
lateral faces .
2) Lateral faces are always triangular shape and
these triangles are isosceles.
3) The names of the pyramids are depending on
their shape of the base.
2) Non-essential attributes :1) The shapes which are 2 dimensional.
 Examples
1) Positive examples:
2)Negative examples :
4) Definition: A Pyramid is a polyhedron that has a base, which can be any
polygon, and three or more triangular faces that meet at a point.
Classroom interaction procedure Responses
PHASE 1 : Presentation of the data and
identification of the concept
Teacher: Today we are going to study in a
different way. I will give you some examples
which are essential and non-essential to the
concept in my mind. You have to find out what is
that concept, from the examples given and also
defines the concept.
Teacher:
This is an essential example for the concept in my
mind.
Student: The base is square, lateral faces are
triangles and also it is a 3 dimensional shape.
Teacher :
This is a non-essential example for my concept
Orientation of the process
Teacher presents the first positive
example.
Students form the first hypothesis.
Teacher presents the negative example.
Classroom interaction procedure Responses
Students: It has four sides and it is a 2
dimensional shape.
Teacher :
This is an essential example for my concept.
Student: The base is a pentagon, lateral faces
are isosceles triangles and it is a 3 dimensional
shape.
Teacher :
This is a non-essential example for my concept.
Student: It has four sides and it is a 2
dimensional shape.
Students form the second hypothesis.
Teacher presents the second positive
example.
Student forms the third hypothesis.
Student forms fourth hypothesis.
Classroom interaction procedure Responses
Teacher: Can you identify the characteristics of the
concept in my mind, from these examples?
Student: A base with different polygons, lateral
faces is isosceles triangles and 3 dimensional
shapes.
PHASE 2 : Testing the attainment of the concept.
Teacher gives different examples, and asks
students to identify the suitable examples.
Different groups of students are made for this.
Classroom interaction procedure Responses
Teacher presents the unlabelled
examples.
Classroom interaction procedure Responses
From this pupils select the positive examples.
Teacher: Can you guess the name of these
shapes?
Student: NO
Teacher: These shapes are known as
pyramids.
If the pyramids have one base and
three or more than three lateral faces. The
base is any polygon and lateral faces are
always isosceles triangles. The name of the
pyramids are depends on the shapes of their
base.
The pupil finds out the examples.
PHASE 3: Analysis of the thinking strategy
Teacher: How will you attain the concept?
Student: The teacher shows essential and non
essential examples .By analyzes these
examples and finds the characteristics of this
shape.
Teacher names the concept.
Teacher redefines the concept.
Students generate the examples.
Classroom interaction procedure Responses
Teacher: what are the facts to helps the concept
formation.
Student: To reach the concept through the
examples and conclusions.
Discuss the role of examples and
hypothesis.
FOLLOW UP ACTIVITIES
 To collect examples for different pyramid shapes
