CORRECTION CENTER
Correction facility is a term that may be used to
refer to a jail, prison or other place of incarceration
by government officials. They serve to confine and

7. Causes of violence in correction
center:
• The perpetrators of violent attacks are
convicted criminals, some of whom in prison
for committing crimes that left multiple people
brutally beaten and left for dead, so violence is
in many of these individual’s nature.

8. • Indirect supervision
Indirect supervision is when a correctional officer is placed in an
enclosed booth and must constantly watch over the inmates through
a bird’s eyes view. The physical interactions that officers have with the
inmates is minimal, for most of the communication comes through
an intercom system.
These are created through indirect supervision because the guards
standing watch can have objects blocking tiny spots or they may just
not be looking in the right direction at the right time.

9. • Direct supervision:
Direct supervision is a more personal type of design because officers
are assigned a cell block to patrol. Through this layout, the guards
actually speak to cellmates one-on-one. The minor altercations that take
place throughout the day is directly handled by the patrol officer, but
this single officer cannot prevent a violent attack from happening. As
soon as their back is turned or their attention is focused on someone
else, the perpetrator can still commit their violence. In this form of
supervision officers are left more vulnerable, but it also leads to,
decreased tension and stress of staff and inmates. Direct supervision is
more of a hands-on form of management, where major incidents are not
as numerous and minor incidents result in higher numbers.2/24/2020 9
10. • Overcrowding
Overcrowding is a huge problem many prisons
face because handling so many short-fused
inmates at once can lead to many altercations. The
combination of overcrowding, inadequate
supervision, and inmate access to weapons- can
create opportunities for offenses. Overcrowding is a
very common issue that leads to violence in
correctional centers.

11. Prevention of violence in
correctional centers:
• Correctional health programs are an important
public health resource in the identification, care,
and treatment of individuals who have been
involved in violent acts.
• Specifically, correctional health services should
take the following measures:

12. • Incorporate violence risk assessment—including child
and domestic abuse, sexual abuse, and personal
victimization—into receiving screening of all inmates
upon intake, all inmate health assessments, and mental
health evaluations.
• Refer as appropriate all inmates with violent histories
(i.e., those with expressive violence), including those who
exhibit violent behaviors that place the safety and welfare
of themselves or others in jeopardy, to treatment by
appropriately trained health care providers.2/24/2020 12
13. • Develop protocols and guidelines for violence
prevention, intervention, and follow-up to be used
by qualified health professionals treating inmates.
• Train correctional officers on prevention of
expressive violence and nonphysical methods to
prevent and/or control disruptive behaviors
stemming from expressive violence.

14. • Establish contacts with community-based
organizations able to assist in treatment and
continuity of care upon the inmate’s release
from the correctional facility.

Incarceration: the state of being imprisoned(jailed)`….. Confine: limit, bound, restrict
An approved school is a type of residential institution to which young people could be sent by a court, usually for committing offences but sometimes because they were deemed to be beyond parental control. They were modelled on ordinary boarding schools, from which it was relatively easy to leave without permission. This set approved schools apart from borstals, a tougher and more enclosed kind of youth prison.
