2. CARE AT BIRTH
Learning Objectives :
After completion of this section the participant
should be able to-
• Prepare newborn corner for providing care at
birth
• Provide care at birth for all newborns
• Identify and manage newborns who may need
special care
3. BASIC NEEDS
The four basic needs of ALL new borns at the
time of birth and for the first few weeks of life
are:
• 1. To be warm
• 2. To breathe normally
• 3. To be protected (prevent infection)
• 4. To be fed
4. New born Care Corner
This is a space within the delivery room for
facilitating immediate care of the new born.
Immediate New born Care:
The immediate care needed for all babies at
birth is outlined in the flow diagram.

Assess by checking
• Is the baby Term gestation?
• Is the amniotic fluid clear?
• Is the baby Breathing or crying?
• Does the baby have Good muscle tone?
If yes, provide Routine care If no Proceed for
resuscitation.
6. ROUTINE CARE
• Place the baby on the mother’s abdomen
• Dry the baby with a warm clean sheet. Do not wipe off vernix.
• Wipe the mouth and nose with a clean cloth
• Clamp the cord after 1-3 min and cut with a sterile instrument. Tie the cord
with a sterile tie
• Examine the baby quickly for malformations/birth injury
• Leave the baby between the mother’s breasts to start skin-to-skin care.
• Support initiation of breastfeeding
• Cover the baby’s head with a cloth. Cover the mother and baby with a warm
cloth
• Place an identity label on the baby
• Give Inj Vit K 1mg IM (0.5mg for preterm)
• Record the baby’s weight
• Refer if birth weight < 1500g, has major congenital malformations or has
severe respiratory distress
7. METHOD OF HEAT LOSS AND ITS
PREVENTION
• Evaporation (e.g. Wet baby)- Immediately after
birth dry baby with a clean, warm, dry cloth.
• Conduction (e.g. contact with a cold surface of a
weighing scale)- Put the baby on the mother’s
abdomen or on a warm surface.
• Convection(e.g exposure to draught)- Provide a
warm, draught free room for delivery at ≥ 25ºC
• Radiation (e.g. Cold surroundings) -Keep the
room warm
8. The baby’s need to breathe normally
• Follow the steps of resuscitation if the baby is
gasping.
• Those who are breathing normally need to be
provided routine care.
9. OTHER ASPECTS OF CARE
• Immediate Cord Care
• Care of the eyes
• Examine the baby quickly for
malformations/birth injury.
• Weighing the baby
• Initiate breastfeeding within 1 hour
