2. • Investment manager Steve Trowern and his
wife, Marcella Jordan, Vice President of
Medicare and Compliance Programs at Kaiser
Permanente, recently organized a New York
City fundraiser to benefit Hope for Gus, a
nonprofit group dedicated to finding a cure for
Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD).
3. • Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a fatal disease that
causes severe progressive muscle atrophy. Because DMD
is a genetic mutation found on the X chromosome, it
most commonly affects boys. Children with DMD do
not produce usable dystrophin protein and are unable to
maintain proper skeletal and smooth muscle function in
their bodies. The disease first causes children to lose
their ability to walk and eventually affects their hearts
and diaphragms. Currently, most boys with DMD die
before they reach the age of 30. The most severe form
of muscular dystrophy, DMD is considered the leading
genetic cause of death in children around the world.
4. • Hope for Gus was founded to give hope to the
thousands of families affected by DMD. Funds
raised by the organization aid promising
research efforts, which include the possibility
of using stem cell therapies and nutritional
supplements to preserve muscle strength and
slow the progression of the disease.
