Ancient Period, upto 1200 AD
Rajput clans emerged and held their sway over different parts of
Rajasthan from about 700 AD. Before that, Rajasthan was a part of
several republics. It was a part of the Mauryan Empire. Other major
republics that dominated this region include the
Malavas, Arjunyas, Yaudhyas, Kushans, Saka Satraps, Guptas and
Hunas.
The Rajput clans ascendancy in Indian history was during the
period from the eighth to the twelfth century AD. The Pratihars
ruled Rajasthan and most of northern India during 750-1000 AD.
Between 1000-1200 AD, Rajasthan witnessed the struggle for
supremacy between Chalukyas, Parmars and Chauhans.
5. STATE PROFILE
Located in northwest India, Rajasthan borders Punjab in the north, Haryana
and Uttar Pradesh in the northeast, Madhya Pradesh in the east and Gujarat in
the south. On the western side, it shares a long stretch of border with the
neighboring country Pakistan. Situated on the Thar Desert, Rajasthan protects
the western border of the country standing as the sentinel who never tires.
Rajasthan is diagonally divided into the hilly and rugged southeastern region
and the barren Thar Desert, which extends across the border into Pakistan.
Rajasthan is one of the driest regions in India. Except in the hills of the Aravali
range, temperature in most other parts of the state reaches the 40°C mark
during the summer months. Winters are mild in Rajasthan with the
temperatures ranging between 22°C and 8°C. The climate of Rajasthan is
characterized by dry and hot winds. The rainfall, which is characteristically
scanty, comes during the month of July and September. However rainfall is
comparatively high in the hilly Aravalli range.

Most of the region is covered by Thar Desert.
Around three-fifths of Rajasthan lies northwest of the Aravallis, leaving
two-fifths on the east and south.
The Thar covers the international border in the west.
10. CONNECTIVITY
Air
As far as air transport is concerned, Jaipur airport is Rajasthan's
International airport. There are other airports at Jodhpur and Udaipur
while the one at Jaisalmer is only open from October to March. Indian
Airlines and Jet Airways operate regular flights to Rajasthan from New
Delhi and Mumbai.
The Sanganer airport, Jaipur provides flight services to Dubai. The first
international flight from Dubai had landed on 7 February 2002. The
daily service between the two cities started from 12 February. Now
Jaipur has become the 15th city in India to be connected to the Gulf.

RAIL
Rajasthan has well network of railways and highly developed railway stations.
The major towns of the state are well connected by regular trains running to
the cities like New Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad
and Ahmedabad. The major cities of Rajasthan like Ajmer, Alwar, Bharatpur,
Bikaner, Chittorgarh, Ganganagar, Jaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Kota, Nagaur
and Sawai Madhopur come under the national rail network.
ROAD
The road transport system in the state is managed by the Rajasthan State
Road Transport Corporation (RSRTC). Huge numbers of buses run to all
important places in Rajasthan and adjoining States of Gujarat, Haryana,
Punjab, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh and
Maharashtra. Buses leave New Delhi every 15 minutes.
12. CLIMATIC CONDITIONS
Generally hot and dry
Summer extends from April to June ranging from 35o to 45o c
Winter extends from December to march ranging from 10o c to 27o c
Monsoon lies during the period of July to September ranging from 35o c to 40o
c The rainfall is between 100MM – 165MM.
October & November is the post monsoon season. The maximum temperature
ranges between 33o c to 38o c and minimum is between 18o c to 20o c
13. PEOPLE
Brahmins : Their main occupation was worshipping and performance of
religious rites.
Vaishya : These people generally took up business as their source of livelihood.
These days they are settled in every nook and corner of the country.
Many tribes are also found in different parts of Rajasthan. These tribes have
their own social systems and customs.Some of the commonly known tribes are
Meena, Bhil, Garasia, Kanjar.
Some of these religions are:
Jain Religion: the Jains follow the teachings of Lord Mahavira, the 24th
Tirthankara. Mahavira stressed on the practice Non-violence.
Some other major religions that are followed are Buddishm, Sikh, Islam,
Chirstianity, Parsi religion.
14. CULTURAL HERITAGE
Cultural traditions which reflect the ancient Indian way of life.
Variety of “folk” culture.
The Ghoomer dance from Udaipur and Kalbeliya dance of
Jaisalmer are World famous.
Kathputli, bhopa, chang, tertali, ghindar, kachchhighori, tejaji
etc. are examples of traditional culture.
Religious festivals are Deepawli, Holi, Gangaur, Makar
Sankranti, Janmashtami.
Languages – Marwari, Mewari, Dhundhari, Mewati & harauti.
Desserts – dal baati churma, pakode, besan gatte, dal dhokle..
15. GOVERNMENT & ECONOMY

Economy is primary agricultural and pastoral.
Wheat and Barley cultivated in large areas.

Rajasthan is the largest producer of edible oil and whool.
It is the second largest producer of oil seeds.
16. STATE EXPORTS
The Block Prints, Tie & dye prints, bagaru prints, Sanganer
prints, and zari embriodary are the major exports.
Handicrafts like wooden furniture, carpets, and blue pottery.
Rajasthan is known as the Shoppers Paradise.
Rajasthan is largest exporters of Marbles in India.
Rajasthan also exports chittar patthar and kota stone.
