The four-tier Santa Fe Series II range comprises:
AN EVEN-BETTER SANTA FE
Santa Fe Series II further enhances qualities that have helped Santa Fe
accrue many awards internationally, including multiple design and safety
awards in Europe and the US.
2. In Australia, Hyundai Santa Fe recently was awarded twice in the
motoring.com.au Recommends Awards - once in the over-$30K Family Cars
category, then (with All-new Tucson) as joint winner in the Awards' under-
$50K SUVs category.
Among other important awards in Australia, Hyundai Santa Fe won Australia's
Best Car Award for the popular SUV $45k-$65k category in 2014. The award
represented the third consecutive win for Hyundai Santa Fe in the coveted
Australia's Best Car Awards.
EXTERIOR/DESIGN
Santa Fe Series II arrives with a fresh new face inspired by the new Tucson,
with new-design bumpers, headlights, grille treatment and more.
Entry-level Santa Fe Series II Active is identifiable by its chrome-on-silver
Hyundai 'Family' grille. Santa Fe Series II Elite and top-spec Highlander
feature a satin-chrome grille surround and inserts.
Santa Fe Series II's new-design front and rear bumpers with silver-effect skid
plate. The rear bumper houses dual trapezoidal chrome exhaust tips.
Headlights and tail-lights have been redesigned, together with new fog-lights
and LED Daytime Running Lights (DRL). The new tail-lights on Santa Fe
Series II Highlander variants incorporate LEDs in the bulb turn signal and
reverse lamp.
Santa Fe Series II Active variants ride on new-design 17-inch alloy wheels,
while Elite and Highlander variants get new design 18-inch and 19-inch alloy
wheels respectively.
A NEW STANDARD OF SAFETY
In addition to its already-available Lane Departure Warning (LDW) system,
Santa Fe Series II Highlander brings important new advanced safety features,
including:
Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) and Forward Collision Warning (FCW)
3. Santa Fe Series II Highlander's Autonomous Emergency Braking (AEB) system
interprets information received from the Smart Cruise Control (SCC) radar and
LDW camera to identify emergency situations undetected by the driver.
The system functions at speeds between 8km/h and 70km/h for pedestrians
and between 8km/h and 180km/h for vehicles in front. The system applies full
braking power if it determines a crash is imminent. At speeds below 80km/h,
the system rapidly reduces vehicle speed and Santa Fe Series II can be
automatically brought to a stop if sufficient braking distance is available.
At speeds above 80km/h, AEB provides partial braking to reduce the severity
of accidents and allow the driver to conduct a safe and controlled avoidance
manoeuvre. At all speeds, the Forward Collision Warning (FCW) function of
the AEB system warns the driver of potential danger ahead via audible and
visual alerts.
Smart Cruise Control (SCC)
Utilising information relayed from the radar sensor housed in the front lower
grille (including speed and distance of vehicles ahead), Santa Fe Series II
Highlander's Smart Cruise Control (SCC) automatically regulates the cruising
speed set by the driver (across a range of 30-180km/h), and maintains a safe
distance from vehicles ahead.
The intelligent system maintains function in stop/start traffic, bringing the
vehicle to a complete stop when appropriate, then automatically (if within
three seconds) accelerating it back to the original set speed. (When stationary
longer than three seconds, SCC prompts the driver to resume the selected
cruising speed via a steering wheel switch or - accelerator pedal input)
Blind Spot Detection (BSD)
At speeds above 30km/h sophisticated rear sonars monitor the areas next to
and diagonally behind Santa Fe Series II. When a vehicle enters this blind
spot, BSD issues a visual alert in the corresponding side mirror. If the driver
proceeds to initiate the turn signal, a flashing visual warning is provided
4. accompanied by an audible alert.
Lane Change Assist (LCA)
LCA helps reduce accidents caused when changing lanes in front of faster-
travelling vehicles. LCA scans the road behind Santa Fe Series II Highlander
for vehicles approaching rapidly from the rear. If a vehicle is detected
travelling at a higher rate of speed, LCA uses the vehicle's BSD warning
measures to alert the driver of a potentially hazardous situation.
Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA)
Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA) monitors vehicles approaching from the left
and right side of Santa Fe Series II Highlander when reversing at speeds
below 10 km/h. RCTA is especially helpful when reversing out of
perpendicular parking spaces in crowded places where vision is limited, such
as supermarkets, apartment buildings and parking lots.
If RCTA detects an approaching vehicle (travelling between 4km/h and
36km/h), the driver receives audible and visual alerts via a flashing light in the
corresponding mirror and a warning message on the instrument panel.
Smart Parking Assist System (SPAS)
In addition to the existing 'Parallel Parking' mode, the updated Smart Parking
Assist System (SPAS) on Santa Fe Series II Highlander brings new 'Reverse
Parking' (90-degree) and 'Exit' modes.
The new 'Reverse Parking' (90-degree) mode helps the driver locate and park
in a 90-degree reverse-angle parking spaces. The new 'Exit' mode helps when
driving out of a parallel parking space, where SPAS was used to previously
park the vehicle.
As with the existing 'Parallel Parking' mode, the Santa Fe Series II
Highlander's new system prompts the driver to control the backwards/forward
motion of the vehicle (via the accelerator/brake/gear lever), while the system
controls the steering wheel to guide the vehicle in and out of the parking
spot.
5. INTERIOR AND CONNECTIVITY / COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGY
Inside, Santa Fe Series II boasts design and specification upgrades that
further enhance the model's premium feel.
Key interior changes include:
• New-look instruments cluster
• New audio head units
• New interior trim (Active: Woodgrain effect. Elite and Highlander: Matte
carbon effect.)
New Touchscreen Multimedia Systems
The new touchscreen multimedia systems utilise larger displays (7.0-inch in
Active variants, 8.0-inch satellite-navigation system in Elite and Highlander),
and offer a wide range of connectivity options, including USB, AUX, digital
iPod, and Bluetooth.
Siri Eyes Free (iOS) and Google Now (Android) Voice Activation (Active
variants)
The 7.0-inch audio system in Santa Fe Series II Active integrates with Siri (on
compatible iOS devices) or Google Now (on compatible Android devices) via
voice activation. The 'Voice' button on the audio unit connects users to Siri
(iOS) or Google Now (Android) to make calls, play music, compose text
messages, access calendar information, add reminders and more.
Infinity® 550W Logic7® 10-speaker Premium Audio System (Elite &
Highlander)
Available in Elite and Highlander variants, the new audio system is optimised
for Santa Fe Series II's cabin acoustics.
Paired with the satellite-navigation system, the Infinity® premium audio
system uses six speakers, two tweeters, a centre speaker, sub-woofer and
external amplifier. The system utilises advanced Digital Signal Processing
(DSP) to provide equalisation, spectral management, time alignment, and
Logic7® surround sound processing to optimise the listening experience
inside Santa Fe Series II.
6. ENGINES/DRIVETRAINS
Santa Fe Series II's petrol and diesel engines have been further refined by
Hyundai engineers.
2.4 GDi Petrol (Active)
The updated Gasoline Direct Injection (GDi) and Dual Continuously Variable
Valve Timing (D-CVVT) Theta-II 2.4 GDi Petrol engine available with Santa Fe
Series II Active delivers 138kW @ 6,000rpm (-3kW) and 241Nm @ 4,000rpm
(-1Nm). Although outputs are slightly reduced, the engine has been optimised
to deliver improved driveability and real world performance.
Transmission choice with the Active-only Theta II 2.4GDi is a six-speed
manual or six-speed automatic. Fuel economy with both transmissions is
9.4L/100km (+0.3l/100km), but the trade-off is with improved drivability,
especially at lower and mid-range engine speeds.
2.2 CRDi Diesel (all variants)
The updated Common Rail Direct Injection (CRDi) R 2.2 Diesel engine now
delivers 147kW @ 3,800 rpm (+2kW) and 440Nm @ 1,750-2,750rpm
(+4Nm). The increased peak power/torque, and broadened torque spread
improves performance and driveability under all conditions.
The R 2.2 CRDi Diesel engine is available with a six-speed manual gearbox
(Active only) or six-speed automatic transmission.
Fuel economy is: 6.3L/100km with manual transmission and 7.7L/100km with
six-speed automatic, representing a 0.3L/100km improvement over the
outgoing manual model, and a 0.4L/100km improvement for the six-speed
automatic.
TUNED LOCALLY FOR AUSTRALIAN CONDITIONS
7. Santa Fe Series II carries over the impressive locally-focused suspension and
development work specified after exhaustive testing by Hyundai Motor
Company Australia's respected in-house chassis and suspension tuning
division led by General Manager Product Engineering, Mr Hee Loong Wong
(aka 'Wongy').
The local development program combined exhaustive on-road evaluations and
advanced computer modeling, with HMCA's team evaluating 64 different
combinations of springs and dampers for the Santa Fe Series II.
In all, 85 different damper combinations were evaluated - 59 at the rear and
26 up front - while rear spring rates eventually were increased by four
percent, partly to improve Santa Fe Series II's load-carrying ability.
"The stiffer rear springs also improved turn-in," says Andrew Tuitahi, Hyundai
Motor Company Australia's Senior Manager Product Planning and lead test
driver. "That gave us a more responsive car, with a higher yaw rate and
better mid-corner response to throttle adjustments."
Santa Fe Series II is also fitted with a small but significant upgrade to its rear
suspension, where new-shape trailing arm bushes reduce shake and improve
ride quality, while an additional control arm increase lateral stiffness for
improved handling stability.
