Barack Obama was the first African American president of the United States. He was elected in 2008, defeating Republican John McCain. As president, Obama implemented a major economic stimulus package to respond to the recession, invested in education and infrastructure, and nominated the first Hispanic woman, Sonia Sotomayor, to the Supreme Court. His domestic policies also addressed environmental protection, gun control, and health care reform. In foreign policy, Obama increased troop levels in Afghanistan and oversaw the mission that killed Osama bin Laden in 2011. He was re-elected president in 2012.
