2. Psycholinguistics
It’s a psychology of language
Involved in language use and brain mechanisms
associated with language
Deals with speech comprehension, production and
acquisition of language
Neurobiological factors help people to understand
and use the language by acquiring the subtle
nuances of that language
Throws light on how the language is acquired by
the human mind for the first time
3. Theories of psycholinguistics
Major theories are classified under:
- Language Acquisition
- Language Comprehension
- Language Production
4. Language Acquisition
The theory propounded by Jean Piaget and
Rudolf Carnap states that all languages
must be learned by the child
Second school believes that there is no
need to learn a language since the human
beings possess innate language faculty
5. Language Comprehension
One of the major concerns of comprehending language
(sentence processing) has been the issue of how people
comprehend and link the sentences with meaning while
reading
The modular view suggests that stages of sentence
processing are independent and they function in separate
modules that have limited interaction with one another
On the other hand, an interactive theory states that any or
all information available in a sentence can be processed at
any time
6. Language Production
This is the final stage of psycholinguistics
Person’s choice of words speaks deeply
about his psychology and mental language
procession mechanism
7. Application of psycholinguistic in current research
Language is the core for business
Objective is to understand how the employees use English in their
day to day work
Target population considered was personnel working in IT sector in
Chennai and comprises of both genders
An attempt was made to understand the respondent’s speaking
ability, vocabulary and intergroup communication
8. Research Methodology
Primary data was collected using
questionnaire and data was analyzed
Respondents were employed with IT sector
in Chennai
Both genders were considered
Age of the respondents were between 25 to
50 years
9. Data Analysis 1/3
Feedback of the male respondents pertaining to their ability speak technical
aspects of their work in English was collected in a 5 point scale

Feedback of the female respondents pertaining to their ability speak technical
aspects of their work in English was collected in a 5 point scale
Majority of female respondents, 96% of them are either dissatisfied or
highly dissatisfied. Only 4% of the female respondents are satisfied with
their ability to speak about the technical aspects of their work in English
11. Data Analysis 3/3
Chi Squared Test was carried out in order to
establish relationship between the gender
and their ability to speak in technical
language
Based on the results the null hypothesis is
rejected which means that there is a
relationship between gender and the ability
to speak in technical language
12. Conclusions
Based on the data, psycholinguistic theories cannot be
explained in detail
Since this is an interdisciplinary area, more data needs to
be analyzed across different sectors
The results can be utilized in the development of human
resources in IT sector
Similar data can be collected and analyzed for other areas
in order to understand the linkage between linguistics and
management of human resources
