This document discusses the problem of non-biodegradable sanitary pads in India and proposes solutions to address it. Over 100,000 tons of sanitary pad waste is generated annually in India, which takes 600+ years to degrade. This waste pollutes the environment and increases health risks. The document proposes setting up production centers to make biodegradable and reusable sanitary pads from materials like bamboo and banana waste. This would reduce environmental impact while also generating employment and additional income for farmers.
2. PROBLEM STATEMENT
In India, the number of menstruating women is 355 million. Women in
India currently generate 100,000+ tons of sanitary pad waste each year
also a single pad takes 600-800 years to degrade. As sanitary pad usage
increases, waste will increase as well also these conventional sanitary
pads causes some women skin irritation and is harmful for
environment,as most of these products end up in landfills or sewage
systems making the environment poisonous as well as hazardous for the
sanitation workers because they are reluctant to separate the soiled
sanitary pads by hand and prepare them for burning increasing mobility
and mortality in them. These non biodegradable sanitary pads are also
costly forcing girls to use a single pad for 12 hours increasing the chances
