This article analyzes how CEO charismatic visions portrayed in organizational discourse influence securities analysts. It hypothesizes that projections of CEO charismatic visions in documents like letters to shareholders affect the favorability of analyst recommendations and the uniformity of recommendations across analysts. However, it also hypothesizes that such projections may be disconnected from organizational performance and thus negatively impact analyst forecast accuracy if the visions are merely symbolic. The study examines these hypotheses using a text analysis of new CEOs' first letters to shareholders following a succession event for 367 US firms from 1990-1999. It analyzes how the portrayal of CEO visionary language relates to the favorability, uniformity and forecast accuracy of analyst evaluations and forecasts.
