2. Background Information
● Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States, was born in a log cabin
in Kentucky on February 12, 1809.
● He is well-known for his efforts to keep the Union together throughout the
American Civil War, as well as his participation in the abolition of slavery.
● Lincoln's path to the presidency, on March 4, 1861, was distinguished by self-
education and a variety of vocations, including farm work, storekeeper, soldier,
surveyor, and postmaster. He also served in the United States House of
Representatives and was well-known for his extraordinary ability as a speaker
and thinker.
● On the evening of April 14, 1865, while attending a play at Ford's Theatre in
Washington, D.C., President Abraham Lincoln was assassinated by John Wilkes
Booth. After being shot in the head, the president was immediately taken to a
boarding house across the street, where he died at 7:22 a.m. on April 15, 1865.

America. One of Abraham Lincoln's

fair in order to instill the same set of
values in his country and its future.

6. How was his Team organized?
● “We need the strongest men of the party in the Cabinet. We needed to hold our
own people together. I had looked the party over and concluded that these were
the very strongest men. Then I had no right to deprive the country of their
services.”
● Lincoln selected powerful politicians, some of whom were past and future
presidential candidates, to his cabinet, repeating his strategy of assembling a
team of his most capable adversaries.
