Ross Contractors installed Guardian Seeing Machines throughout their fleet to improve driver safety and prevent accidents caused by fatigue or distraction. The machines use cameras and sensors to monitor drivers for signs of fatigue, and will alert drivers and notify management if issues are detected. Ross values safety and wants to protect their drivers and other road users, so they trust the Guardian technology to help manage fatigue risks and ensure accidents are avoided.
2. Our Objective
At Ross Contractors we have an outstanding team of drivers, with many working for
Ross between 5 -10 years. They carry an enormous responsibility of getting our trucks
from A to B whilst providing great customer service; maintaining our Ross
Reputation. Therefore, in return it is our utmost priority to keep them safe and we
have no doubt that Guardian Seeing Machine’s will provide this security.
Ross Contractors has been in business since 1972 and ever since has strived to expand
and develop the company. In order to do this successfully and safely we understand
the importance of keeping up to date with modern technology. Hence, the reason we
did not hesitate on installing cutting-edge technology (Guardian Seeing Machine &
Safety Camera’s) into our fleet.

3. Our Objective
Unfortunately, heavy vehicle road accidents are far to frequent with fatigue and distraction
the most common causes. Approximately 80 per cent of fatal crashes that involve heavy
trucks are multi-vehicle crashes (Australian Government , 2018). We understand the truck
may not be at fault in these accidents. However, with instillation of Guardian Seeing
Machines throughout our fleet makes it extremely unlikely for our drivers to have an
accident caused by distraction or fatigue. Ultimately we aim to create a safe working
environment, not only for our drivers but importantly other road users.
Here at Ross Contractors we value our
customers and always aspire to deliver the best
service possible. The installation of Guardian
Seeing Machine’s gives customers a guarantee
that whilst Ross Contractor’s are carting their
products, drivers fatigue and safety is being
managed in the most effective way possible.

4. What is Guardian - Seeing Machines?
Guardian is known as “World leading technology that prevents driver fatigue and
distraction related events in real time, to enhance safety.” – Guardian, 2019.
Guardian machines are being used in leading transport and logistic companies world wide
and so far have intervened in more than 70,000 fatigue events and detected more than
3,500,000 distracted driving events. View video 1 for an example of how Guardian Seeing
Machines intervene via audio alarms.

Example of how Seeing Eye works
We have put 100% trust in Guardian
Seeing Machines, knowing they have
more than 15 years of research and
development behind their technology to
ensure it is successful.
Here at Ross Contractors we have
identified and acknowledged an
improvement in our driver’s performance
and driving habits since the installation of
Guardian Seeing Machines.
5. How it works
Located on the trucks dash (as seen in image 4) is an in-cab
guardian sensor. This is the machine that detects the drivers
head position and eye closure through Face- and gaze-tracking
algorithms displayed in image 5.
In the likelihood of an event where the face- and gaze-tracking
algorithms cannot detect the drivers eyes either due to fatigue
or distraction audio alarms in conjunction with a powerful seat
vibration are immediately activated. These safety mechanisms
alert the driver whilst providing protection of their safety.

When the seat vibration and audio are activated, both the Guardian Sensor Camera (image 4) and the Road View Camera (image 6
and 7) begin recording. These cameras record approximately 10 seconds of the event and provide relevant footage of both in-cab
and road activity as displayed in video 2 and 3.
Majority of the time when the sensor can detect the drivers eye’s, the Guardian Camera’s do not record any footage. This gives our
drivers the privacy and respect they deserve.

7. How it works
The footage and data captured from event is
immediately sent to the 24/7 Guardian Centre,
who will then alert and contact management via
phone and email for fatigue events and email for
distraction events.
All footage from the In-cab Sensor and Guardian
Road View Camera is accessible to view in the
Guardian Live Portal this is where event reports
(example image 8) can be located.

Data received from Guardian
As shown in image 8 the report contains relevant information including:
• Location of the event (can be displayed on a map)
• Speed travelled at the time of the event
• Distance travelled
• Duration of the event
From the information received by Guardian, Ross Contractors management can take corrective action in regards to the
situation in the cab. Whether the best course action is allowing driver more rest time, taking frequent breaks or ending
the shift – we understand and we are happy to facilitate.
8. Safety Camera’s

In conjunction with the Guardian Seeing
Machines the Ross’ fleet also have
Digital Video Recorder’s (DVR) installed.
Each truck has three camera’s two of
which are located on the side mirrors
(view image 10) and the other located
above the dash (view image 9).
Unlike the Guardian Camera these DVR
camera’s are active and recording when
the truck is in motion. Ross Contractors
management can view the footage from
these camera’s at any time if and when
required.
We use these DVR Camera’s as
protection for our drivers, company and
customers in the case of an incident. If
an incident does occur we are able to
provide accurate details of the event.
