The superintendent believes teacher absences follow a Poisson distribution with parameter λ. Data on absences over 50 days was used to construct a 95% confidence interval for λ. The interval was calculated using the fact that for a Poisson variable, the mean and variance both equal λ, allowing the test statistic Z=√(X-nλ)/nλ to be used to find the interval.
