processes, business applications, data models, IT
architecture, IT platforms and tools
• A lack of formal guidelines and documented
standards in various areas to ensure that
daily operations and developments follow
agreed rules and recommendations

Creation of an Enterprise Architecture practice
Implementation of data management policy and standards
EA management review (2013)
Recommendations..
Define enterprise architect role and responsibilities
Improve documentation through standard document
sets and templates
Define formal communications within IT and between
IT and the business
Create awareness of standardisation and promote

4. EA Review
• CSO IT capabilities assessed under the IT Capability Maturity Framework
(IT-CMF)
• EAM maturity was assessed between high ‘Level 1’ and a low ‘Level 2’
• The aim is to bring EA in CSO to Level 3 of the framework
Typical architectural practises at level 3 will include:
• Architect role assigned and well understood
• Adoption of a standard framework and use of this across IT
• Defined architectural governance and adoption across IT
• Common templates for services, IT vision and roadmaps
• Clear communication to the business
• Architecture is a common practise
8. Current initiatives
• Data Management Project
• Security Review
• IT Applications Review
• Software & Tools Review
9. Challenges for EA in CSO
• Resourcing
• Acquiring appropriate skillsets
• Competing demands on IT
• EA understanding
• Mindset change
• Governance
• Resourcing!

To streamline statistics production and the development and implementation of corporate systems to underpin the operation of the business.
2. This should be implemented as part of architecture function to leverage on resource and processes.
The presence of a documented enterprise architecture (EA) would facilitate coherence in all new developments, ensuring that, besides addressing a current or urgent business need, each development is contributing towards the longer-term goal position. In other words each development represents a building block of functionality as well as being a solution to the current business need.
A documented EA would also act as a very effective communication tool, and provide a clear guiding vision for the IT Directorate and all business units in the CSO. With a documented EA , it is easier for IT staff to focus on and give appropriate priority to developments that are leading to the long-term vision for the office. It is easier also for other business units to have a clear understanding of the current IT Strategy and how IT contributes to the business needs and priorities..
Evidence of governance in existence i.e. CAB, informal weekly team meetings

IT Applications Review – Categorise – status: production, development, legacy, roadmap..
Software & Tools Review - in assessment, approved, unapproved, for removal
