4. Slumdog Millionaire & Audience
Audience Appeals meets responses!
What do you feel are the most significant
successes of the film?
The examiner wants to know that you have
an excellent knowledge of the text but
doesn’t want you to reel off a list of facts.
Look at some of the more ‘fact based’
successes – can you analyse these? What are
or what have been the implications of these?
Write either the opening paragraph or the
concluding thoughts of an essay which discusses
the success of Slumdog Millionaire.
5. Slumdog Millionaire & Audience
The exam will ask you to choose a question about Audiences. You may select to answer this based on your
knowledge of the film industry and the three case studies – of which Slumdog Millionaire is one!
Therefore, you need to have something to say about audiences and their relationship with the film!
With a partner, create a presentation (a document you will keep and use to revise) which considers the three key
strands of audience that we looked at whilst studying for the AS.
Audience Appeal
How does this film attract audiences to go and see it? What is the appeal of the
actual film? This section of your presentation will undoubtedly include some
industry information, but also include many of the things we have looked at that
make a film watchable again & again. Think of Narrative & Genre expectations and
also how it challenges them. Think of the style. Think about what it tells us about
life. Think about elite persons. Present this information – with EVIDENCE!
Audience Responses
You have looked at many reviews of the film from lots of film experts – but not
every audience is a film expert. In fact, the film was praised for crossing Art House
movie ideas, techniques and subject matter with a commercial romantic genre
movie! So how did ‘the people’ respond?
Decide what the key messages and ideas the film is trying to portray – this is the
preferred reading. Go on to forums, find comments after reviews and build a
profile of preferred, oppositional, and if you can – negotiated readings of the
movie. Use some key examples for your presentation.
Audience Classification
Who is this film for? As aforementioned – it seemed to appeal to everyone! You know a
variety of ways of classifying the audience – apply them to the actual film. Then go back to
the marketing – how have they tried to market this to lots of different audience groups and
HOW have they done it? Once again your ideas must be backed up – with EVIDENCE!
