Today's studios and visual effects companies require massive computing power and large amounts of storage to produce high-end digital scenes and videos. Maintaining the infrastructure required for these jobs is expensive and operationally difficult, plus demand fluctuates day to day. Geographically diverse workforces adds additional complexity to data and content transfer. The low-cost, utility computing model as well as unique virtualization capabilities offered by AWS are well-suited to addressing these challenges. In this session you will learn how to build and deploy a studio-quality, scalable Arnold render farm on AWS with reusable templates. We'll also demonstrate how to run Maya and Deadline remotely with AWS AppStream, and use them to edit scenes and coordinate render jobs entirely in the cloud.

Visual effects rendering has traditionally been a time consuming, resource intensive process. As a result, content producers are moving rendering workloads to the AWS cloud to take advantage of the scalable, on-demand compute resources that can accelerate their rendering workloads. By attending this webinar, you will learn how to create a scalable rendering infrastructure to grow your farm for any size workload, reduce overall processing time with on-demand and reserve compute instances, and move to a project based cost structure. You will also learn how to implement hybrid rendering workloads using Thinkbox dependency manager. Learning Objectives: How to use AWS Cloud to rapidly scale up and down rendering infrastructure to power ThinkBox Deadline software in the cloud for visual effects rendering Who should attend: IT administrators, rendering and visual effects professionals

Cloud is the de-facto standard for data driven applications. However, cloud provider services tend to be slow, expensive and come with potential lock-ins. With emerging open-source cloud-native orchestration tools like Kubernetes, open source data stores and serverless platforms you can build your own multi tenancy cloud data service, save costs and gain performance and portability. The session will describe how you can build an equivalent set of AWS data services with cloud agnostic tools and achieve an Amazon like experience. Present a variety of analytics tools and explain how to use Kubernetes, as well as how to handle . A lesson learned through the suffering of others.

In two years, Docker hit the sweet spot for devs and ops, with tools for building, shipping, and running distributed apps architected as a set of collaborating microservices packaged as Linux containers. One area of the Docker ecosystem that saw a lot of innovation in the past year is container orchestration systems. This session compares and contrasts various Docker orchestration systems (Swarm, Machine, and Compose), the batteries included with Docker itself, Mesos, Kubernetes, CoreOS/Fleet, Deis, Cloud Foundry, and Tutum. It includes a demo of how to deploy a Java 8 app with MongoDB on several of these systems. The goal of the session is to give you a framework to help evaluate how these systems can meet your particular requirements.

Watson developer cloud delivers Watson Cognitive services as micro services on the cloud that are being used by many IBM Watson customers. The micro services were packaged in ova at the first release. There were some drawbacks in ova deployment in the cloud. We gradually switched to use docker. As a result, the service deployment time and start up time are significantly improved. It also greatly simplified our continuous delivery process since our services run on both Intel and Power platform and we have offerings on our public cloud, dedicated cloud as well as customers’ on premise cloud. With minimal deployment time and quick startup time, Docker makes our dynamic creation of service instance on the fly per customer request possible.

MariaDB recently introduced a pair of Docker sandboxes for running MariaDB clusters. The sandboxes, using Docker Compose, make it easy to run a local MariaDB cluster for transactional and/or analytical processing. The transactional sandbox starts up a MariaDB cluster with replication and automatic failover while the analytical sandbox starts up a MariaDB AX cluster with sample data and an Apache Zeppelin notebook.

SkyDock is an open source solution for building & hosting Docker images at scale in the cloud. Designed to solve real-world problems faced in traditional CI systems that limit throughput and hinder your ability to deliver software quickly and reliably. From a Skyscanner Engineering perspective this is a great opportunity to showcase some of the cutting edge work that we are doing with Docker, Ansible and AWS. It also highlights that we are solving problems at scale from a both a technical and organisational perspective.

In this deck from the Stanford HPC Conference, Christian Kniep from Docker, Inc. gives a tutorial on linux containers. "This tutorial provides a detailed overview of the components needed to run containerized applications and explores how distributed HPC applications can be tackled. We’ll explain the concept of Linux Containers and describe the bits and pieces participants will explore following step-by-step examples. The workshop will introduce the predominant forms of orchestration in the industry; what problems they solve and how to approach the problem. Attendees will explore the benefits and drawbacks of orchestrators first hand with their own small exemplary stack deployments. Finally the workshop will introduce how HPC and Big Data workloads can be tackled on-top of these service-oriented clusters." Oliver Pomeroy - Solution Engineer, Docker Laura Frank Tacho - Director of Engineering, CloudBees Enterprises often want to provide automation and standardisation on top of their container platform, using a pipeline to build and deploy their containerized applications. However this opens up new challenges… Do I have to build a new CI/CD Stack? Can I build my CI/CD pipeline with Kubernetes orchestration? What should my build agents look like? How do I integrate my pipeline into my enterprise container registry? In this session full of examples and “how-to”s, Olly and Laura will guide you through common situations and decisions related to your pipelines. We’ll cover building minimal images, scanning and signing images, and give examples on how to enforce compliance standards and best practices across your teams.

Explore how multimodal embeddings work with Milvus. We will see how you can explore a popular multimodal model - CLIP - on a popular dataset - CIFAR 10. You use CLIP to create the embeddings of the input data, Milvus to store the embeddings of the multimodal data (sometimes termed “multimodal embeddings”), and we will then explore the embeddings.

When you’re building (micro)services, you have lots of framework options. Spring Boot is no doubt a popular choice. But there’s more! Take Quarkus, a framework that’s considered the rising star for Kubernetes-native Java. It always depends on what's best for your situation, but how to choose the best solution if you're comparing 2 frameworks? Both Spring Boot and Quarkus have their positives and negatives. Let us compare the two by live coding a couple of common use cases in Spring Boot and Quarkus. After this talk, you’ll be ready to get started with Quarkus yourself, and know when to select Quarkus or Spring Boot.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system.
