2. Currently in Greece we are celebrating “the
Carnival Period”,
or as we Greeks say
“Apokries”!
3. During “the Carnival Period”,
we get to dress up like any character
we like,
either from
a movie, ancient times, politicians or
just something funny.
4. We get to dance to all kinds of music
but what we enjoy the most is
dancing our traditional dance called
“gaitanaki”. This “traditional” dance is
said to have originated from a region
called Thessaly located in Greece.
Furthermore, this dance is performed
using a “wooden” pole comprising of
about twelve ribbons. In addition, this
dance is performed in a group of
thirteen, and consists of both males
as well as females.
5. Another tradition especially for meat-
lovers, is the celebration of
Tsiknopempti.
Everyone rushes to prepare and
enjoy their favorite meat dishes for
Tsiknopempti,
which gives it one of its other
common names:
Burnt Thursday.
6. It's a popular day for going out to eat
and enjoying as many different meats
as possible.
The holiday is a part of the Greek
Carnival celebrations and signals the
start of the last weekend that
observant Greek Orthodox Church
members are permitted to eat meat
before fasting for Lent.
This year it takes place on February
20, 2020, which follows the tradition
of occurring 11 days before the start
of …
7. … of Greek Orthodox Lent,
Clean Monday.
Lastly, we celebrate Clean Monday also
known as Ash Monday,
which is a moveable feast,
falling on the 7th Monday
before Pascha
and it refers to the leaving behind
of sinful attitudes
and non-fasting foods.
