2. Gender stereotypes are fixed ideas about men’s and women’s traits and capabilities and
how people should behave, based on their gender. It can be positive or negative attributes,
accurate or inaccurate and can be agreed or rejected by members of stereotyped group. Gender
stereotypes are based on the person’s perception towards a certain idea and concept.
Contrary to popular belief, this photo does display gender stereotyping. The
advertisement depicts a famous brand being advertised by a model. The man is well-dressed in a
suit and bow. The advertisement states that perfection has a name which also means that one can
be perfect just by wearing this brand. Wearing the advertised outfit will result in perfection and
good physical appearances as portrayed as the seen model in the advertisement. In our culture,
the ideal male is perhaps seen as competent, stable, tough, confident, strong, accomplished, non-
conforming, and aggressive.
People have the perception that a male with proper and smart outfit tend to look more
attractive. This advertisement uses the man as an icon to portray an imaginary image whereby
this is the symbol of perfection. Perfection is then defined by one in that sense and will have the
tendency to influence the public to want to purchase the said product and enhance their physical
appearances in terms of fashion. In this sense, the male model are being exploited using his
physical appearances along with the product that is being advertised. When people see something
like that, they will visualize and relate to the term.
In most cases, people will judge one based on the looks which causes stereotyping. Once
they see the certain group of people with the certain traits, they tend to classify them. People tend
to classify those with good outfit to be classy and elegant without knowing the person itself and
vice versa.
3. In a nutshell, the advertisement shows the gender stereotyping towards men and also
people that dress well. This implies how people categorize others based on the characteristics
and it is unavoidable.
