Assignment Set- 1 (60 Marks)
Note: Each question carries 10 Marks. Answer all the questions.
Q.1 What is culture? Discuss the characteristics of culture. [10]
Answer : The concept of Culture is about as old as civilization. The word culture is derived from the
Latin word “cultura” which relates to cult or worship. In its broadest sense the term refers to the
result of human interaction. It comprises the entire set of social norms and responses that condition
people’s behaviour; it is acquired and inculcated, a set of rules and behaviour patterns that an
individual learns but does not inherit at birth. It enables people to make sense of their world. It is the
complex whole that includes knowledge, belief, art, morals, law, custom and other capabilities
acquired by a person as a member of society In
Q.2 Discuss Universalism Vs Particularism [10]
Answer : Universalism vs. Particularism.
The universalist, or rule-based, approach is roughly: "What is good and right can be defined and
ALWAYS applies." In particularist cultures, far greater attention is given to the obligations of
relationships and unique circumstances. Take the case of trying to cross the street at the red light.
In a very rule-based society like the U.S., you will still be frowned at even if there is no traffic. It
tends to imply equality in the sense that
Q.3 Explain the Organizational characteristics of MNC’s [10]
Answer : Today’s MNCs are faced with fast and technologically-influenced changes in global markets.
Optimizing global efficiencies, national responsiveness, and worldwide learning all required MNCs to
find new strategic orientations and changes in organizational capabilities. International markets are
complex and volatile, requiring management to find new ways of efficiently meeting rapid changes.
Many MNCs such as Dow Chemical and Citibank tried different operational management structures,
such as the “Global Matrix” popular in the ‘80’s. This model prescribed MNCs manage their
international operations through an international division at the early stage of foreign expansion,
which both foreign sales and the diversity of
Q.4 What is the importance of different group membership [10]
Answer : People from diverse backgrounds come together to form groups in business and personal
settings. Whether you own a small business, are employed by a company, volunteer at a non-profit
or are a member of a professional organization, working in a group is inevitable. Group work,
whether it is a team of two or a team of 20, is important in solving problems and accomplishing
tasks.
Delegate Tasks
Working in a group allows members to share responsibilities, rather than the brunt of the work
falling in the hands of one person. Instead, group members can delegate tasks to individuals who
possess the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to
Q.5 Given below is some information about the communication pattern followed in
multimode a financial corporation.
The information is transmitted from Manager to subordinate. It is mostly for
operational purposes.
Identify the nature of communication and make suggestions for improving such
communication. [10]
Answer : In an organization communication occurs between members of different hierarchical
positions. Superior-subordinate communication refers to the interactions between organizational
leaders and their subordinates and how they work together to achieve personal and organizational
goals[1] Satisfactory upward and downward communication is essential for a successful organization
because it closes the gap between superior and subordinates by increasing the levels of trust,
support, and the frequency of their interactions.
suggestions for improving Superior-subordinate
Q.6 Mr Thomas works for a UK based Software Company. The company decides to expand
its business in India. What all aspects Mr Thomas needs to consider for doing business in
India.[10]
Answer : DOING BUSINESS IN INDIA
In such a richly diverse and complex country as India it is difficult to impart generic conclusions that
can be used by those doing business there. Regionalism, religion, language and caste are all factors
that need to be taken into account when doing business in India. Behaviour, etiquette and approach
are all modified depending on whom you are addressing and the context in which they are being
addressed.
However, most of those doing business in India will do so in cities such as Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore
and Hyderabad and with a particular socio-
