Editor's Notes

  1. AIM = Icebreaker to try to understand what is difficult about locating information and inturn lead us onto why people have attended and how it will help them in their research Worst/hardest thing about looking for literature OR Hopes to get out of the session
  2. AIM= Introduce the zetoc by including the main things that have been said about it in the market research that MIMAS have been doing. Lead in from previous slide would you say that the following would describe some of the terms that would make literature searching less of a problem for you? Zetoc users have recently been giving some feedback on how they feel about the database Convenience Current awareness Comprehensive coverage
  3. AIM= to introduce the objectives of the session Going to address some of the issues that you have raised and demonstrate to you how you can overcome the worst things that plague you when you are trying to locate literature.
  4. AIM= background to what Zetoc is It is a database containing Vast amounts of data The broad range of subject covers everything from Science through to Art, it is not a subject specific resource. The service is made available through MIMAS here at the University of Manchester. 10 year anniversary this year. British Library’s electronic table of contents Covers 20,000 current journals Over 20 million article and conference records Wide range of subjects Published from 1993 onwards Updated daily Sub-domain Sub-domain Summary
  5. AIM= to demonstrate the breadth of subject areas that Zetoc covers It is useful for looking for performing a broad based search conference papers and new journal articles as it is not so subject constrained as you can see by the top 20 journal titles requested from 1st October 2010. Its main advantage/service is that it performs current awareness searches and delivers information directly to you in the form of e-mail alerts and RSS feeds
  6. AIM= Tips for searching the database If two or more terms are entered then AND is added between the words but it may not find the words adjacent to each other. To conduct a phrase search you will need to add double quotes Truncation involves using the wildcard thus searching for Manage, manager, managing & management Combinations of these can be used
  7. AIM= talk about alerts and why they are useful To make life easier why not set up a zetoc alert. If you have a few key subject journals that you always refer to. Recent market research into current zetoc users conducted by Mimas finds that some researchers who use the service use it not only for their research but also to support their teaching commitments. Image licensed under Creative Commons http://www.flickr.com/photos/alancleaver Keeps you up to date Conducts searches for you E-mails you lists of new articles found by keyword or author E-mails you the journal tables of contents EXAMPLE Journal of Librarianship
  8. AIM= There is debate over what RSS stands for here are a couple of the meanings. There are a couple of ways of subscribing to these Readers These are useful if you use a lot of different computers or already have a login for something like Google or Yahoo. For example in Google once signed in you can use the Reader application. In here you can search for feeds or add the address of a feed and subscribe to it. Bloglines Firefox Live Bookmarks Google Reader My Yahoo Netvibes Pageflakes Wikipedia list of readers Browsers These are useful if you use the same PC all the time and no one else uses it. Internet Explorer 7 has an RSS logo which lights up when you are on a page with live feeds. When you click on the feed logo it takes you to the feed page and then you can subscribe via the browser. It will then be stored like a bookmark. RSS – Really Simple Syndication RSS – Rich Site Summary Provided for every journal title in Zetoc Two ways News/feed readers or aggregators Eg. igoogle, Pageflakes Browser Eg. Firefox Typically contains article reference and a link to the Zetoc citation Firefox works in a similar way to IE and it allows you to subscribe to feeds when you are on a feed page and then it appears as a bookmark. Contains full record display in Zetoc and then you can use the link to the full-text version from the library.
