3. AIDS 2014 Aims
This year the 20th International AIDS Conference,
AIDS 2014 will be held in Melbourne, Australia to
assess progress on the global HIV response and its
future direction. AIDS 2014 is expected to convene
over 14,000 delegates from nearly 200 countries,
including up to 1,000 journalists. The conference will
be held from 20-25 July 2014 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. The
International AIDS Society, the world's leading independent association of HIV
professionals, with more than 16,000 members in 194 countries, is organizing AIDS 2014 in
collaboration with international and local partners.
AIDS 2014 Melbourne Declaration signatories and endorsers call immediate and unified
opposition to discriminatory and stigmatizing practices and urge all parties to take a more
equitable and effective approach through the following
actions:
īˇ Governments must repeal repressive laws and end
policies that reinforce discriminatory/stigmatizing
practices that increase the vulnerability to HIV, while
also passing laws that actively promote equality.
īˇ Decision makers must not use international health
meetings or conferences as a platform to promote
discriminatory laws and policies that undermine health
and wellbeing.
īˇ The exclusion of organizations that promote intolerance
and discrimination including sexism, homophobia, and
transphobia against individuals or groups, from donor funding for HIV programmes.
īˇ All healthcare providers must demonstrate the implementation of non-
discriminatory policies as a prerequisite for future HIV programme funding.
īˇ Restrictions on funding, such as the anti-prostitution pledge and the ban on
purchasing needles and syringes, must be removed as they actively impede the
struggle to combat HIV, sexually transmitted infections, and hepatitis C among sex
workers and people who inject drugs.
4. GET INVOLVED IN AIDS 2014!
Submit an Abstract
Emerging and established researchers are encouraged to submit a late
breaker abstract to one or more of the five scientific tracks

why not link it to the conference as an Affiliated Independent Event? In the past, Affiliated
Independent Events have included meetings, forums,
cultural events, galas and performances.
Affiliated Independent Events should reflect and/or
support the vision and goals of the conference whilst
addressing HIV and AIDS, co-infections or issues faced by
individuals or organizations affected by or responding to
HIV and AIDS. The Affiliated Independent Events application form is accessible through the
online conference profile; submissions now are open. These events should not conflict

Melbourne Youth Force
Melbourne Youth Force is a platform for global youth participation and leadership in the
lead up to, during and long after AIDS2014, which aims at building the capacity of young
people to drive the response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic.
10. The Melbourne Youth Force (MYF) is a coalition of
youth organizations that will work together to
leverage the presence and demands of young

will ensure that young people have a highly visible
attendance at the conference, not only as
delegates, but as organizers, speakers, decision
makers and peers.
The MYF believes that building youth leadership is
critical to building an effective AIDS response
among young people and by young people, especially for key affected populations. This
includes, but is not limited to, young people living with HIV, young people who use drugs,
young sex workers, young men who have sex with men, young women, young migrants
