God bless all the trigger-happy guys, gals,
uncles and aunties too for making the
innovations meaningful. Every twinkle in the
eyes, frozen pout and the Colgate smile is
worth a million. Ask them!
Gals lead. The resurgence of selfies in the early
2010 took its roots in the teenage girls working
endlessly to showcase themselves. Even the
Time magazine considered selfie as one of the
top 10 buzzwords of 2012. The fascination by
PM Modi and his selfie-capturing the world
leaders came much later. Selfies have served
big social purpose too. Selfie with Beti and
Selfie after the vote touched and influenced
people.
Selfies are not confined to humans alone. In
2011 a crested black macaque pressed a trigger
on a wildlife photographer's camera, set up in
an Indonesian jungle for that specific purpose;
when the camera was later recovered it was
found to contain hundreds of selfies, including
one of a grinning female macaque. Check wiki.
The photographer lost the case as the Monkey
had no Intellectual Property Rights!
Social media and the smart phone camera have
once again proven that in all my interactions
with people around and far away, there is only
one person who is most important. Me, Me
and only Me. Thank you God for Me and My
Selfie. Now I know who are my friends and
who are not. Why do you hold back your likes
and dislikes? If you like me, say so. Rather
show it to the world that you like me. Kareena
Kapoor in the Movie, “Jab We Met” gave a very
inspiring idea for others to follow, “Main apni
favourite hoon”. Who is your favourite? You
know it.

I have been taking my mother’s pictures for the
last 30 years. Every time I ask her to look at the
camera, she gets into the attention pose for
National Anthem. I wonder if it is still the
partition hangover! Indians of course are
changing when they look at the
camera…nah…smart phone. The smile and the
pout have become more profound. Even we
have started posing like our fellows from the
South-Asian countries. Selfie-stick brought in a
major techno-convenience. We caught up
soon. Pick it next time when you stop at a
traffic signal. The best stick still remains the
extended arm. What a wonderful feeling! With
friends in close/intimate zone, taking a quick
pic and posting on social media at super-sonic
speed and then waiting for hours for the
numbers of ‘likes’ to go up, is…is…is simply
divine.
We take Selfie everywhere. Even at places
where we should keep the smart phone in bags
or pockets. Selfie at a prayer meeting! Selfie at
the zoo with the animal looking at you! Selfie
at an accident site! What has been your
specialty?
Recently, the Master of Ceremony at a SUFI
MUSIC night lost her cool as the audience was
more keen to show their “uuaan…uuaan…” and
hugs to their smart phone in hand rather than
listening to the love and devotion to God.
I discovered ISHQ SELFIANA. Sorry God. Be
careful when you bless.

audiences. If you are no longer
an adoring fan, they will move
on from you. Be ready to do the
same. The relationship was
missing a crucial ingredient.
Evaluate Options
Moving on can be painful, but it
also gives you a chance to look
for a different way to be in the
world. On the other hand, if
there is still something
important to you in the
relationship, try to find a way to
manage it differently. Perhaps
make some new friends or
develop some support from
other colleagues while you stay
connected to your self-centered
friend, colleague, or relative.
