Victor Delgado has owned The Music Lab music store and teaching business in Yorba Linda for over 20 years. He attributes his success to his social skills and ability to engage with customers. The store displays many rare and antique music memorabilia to attract customers and spark conversations. Over 20,000 aspiring musicians have taken lessons at The Music Lab. Some notable former students include members of bands Social Distortion and Atreyu. The business has also nurtured local celebrities like race car driver Brittany Force.
BYOD policies are circulating in over 40% of all school districts in the USA, and that’s predicted by some analysts to double in 18 months. Meanwhile, in countless classrooms, investments sit quietly, waiting to be used. And just down the halls, many other teachers are formulating their own approaches. And some are creating extraordinary results.
We’ve come a long way in managing, securing and moving digital content and devices. Yet at the heart of the matter, in the dynamic between teacher and student, most educators approaching BYOD struggle. The year ahead provides us with all of the ideas, models, policies and, most importantly, collaborative technologies to make sense out of the opportunity. Let’s call for a global, open frontier conversation on how to make device-integrated classroom teaching really work.

1. V
ictor Delgado attributes his music
business success to “the gift of gab.”
The lobby of his Yorba Linda
shop, The Music Lab, is less like a
sterile reception area and more like
a shrine to classic rock.
Once people come in, his artifacts hook
them, getting them talking, get them interest-
ed. There’s the ultra-rare ’69 Les Paul and a
gold Elvis record set, complete with a ticket to
a show scheduled days after The King’s death.
Lines of hanging guitars are accentuated by
long horn skulls. A picture of Stevie Ray
Vaughan greets you when you walk through
the door.
In more than 20 years of business at the cor-
ner of Main Street and Lemon Drive, some
20,000 aspiring music students have walked
through Delgado’s doors.
The Music Lab has nurtured a handful of
stars. Social Distortion bassist John Maurer
tuned up his technique and Atreyu’s Dan Ja-
cobs came to learn guitar, Delgado said.
Notable locals have passed through Delga-
do’s doors, as well: race car driver Brittany
Force took piano lessons and former Angels
general manager Tony Reagins learned the
bass.
