4 THINGS
TO KNOW
Summer
cool
Although it’s
summer, we
still have our
built-in air
conditioner
that some
refer to as
June gloom
while others
call it a marine
layer or simply
patchy fog.
Weekend
weather
Inland highs
today will be in
the mid-80s
with lows in the
low 60s. Beach
temp highs will
be in the
mid-70s. Fore-
casters say next
week will see
much of the
same.
Hotter in
August
Although the
Earth’s axial
tilt is most
inclined, scien-
tists explain it
takes up to two
months before
the planet’s
Northern
Hemisphere
warms up to
the max.

Fans roar and applaud as their
favorite players are introduced
and take their positions.
But these athletes don’t jog onto
a grassy field wearing soccer
cleats or baseball caps. They don
high-tech headsets and compete
seated in soundproof booths.
They are professional gamers.
With handles such as “Scarlett”
and “Nadeshot,” they are as recog-
nizable to their fans as Mike Trout
or Teemu Selänne. They also take
their game as seriously as any pro
athlete, sometimes putting in
eight to 12 hours of practice a day.
Thousands of eSports fans will
watch their favorite players com-
pete in the Major League Gaming
Championships at the Anaheim
Convention Center this weekend.
More than 1,000 professional and
amateur eSports players will face
off in games such as “StarCraft
II,” “Call of Duty: Ghosts” and “Su-
per Smash Bros. Melee” through
Sunday.

their doctor wasn’t includ-

they called for an appoint-

“This is a massive change

Spurred by the Bay Ar-

within striking distance of
recovering
the jobs lost
during its
deep reces-
sion.
The
state’s un-

seasonally
adjusted,
notched down to 7.6 per-
cent in May from 7.8 per-
cent in April, according to
data released by state offi-

While that was the lowest
in six years, more than 1.4
million people remained out
of work statewide, as pay-
rolls failed to catch up with
population growth.
“California had the sec-
ond-largest job gain of any
state in the nation, after
Texas, in the past year,”
said economist Robert
Kleinhenz of the Los An-
geles County Economic De-
velopment Corporation.
