This document provides an overview of the historical evolution of the Indian legal system. It discusses ancient Hindu law, which originated from religious texts and varied regionally. Classical Hindu law was decentralized and based on Dharma, with sources including Vedas, Smritis (remembered traditions), and Achas (customs). Dharmashastra texts provided rules for an ideal householder. Under British rule, Anglo-Hindu law evolved and the British adopted the English legal system except for Hindu personal laws. Upon independence, Modern Hindu law governed Hindu personal matters like marriage and inheritance. The Constitution established the modern Indian legal system.
