World War 2 began in 1939 after Germany invaded Poland. Germany allied with Italy and Japan to form the Axis powers, who sought to conquer territory and spread their ideology of fascism. In response, the Allies of Britain, France, the Soviet Union and later the United States opposed the expansion of the Axis. After years of global combat that took millions of lives, the Allies emerged victorious in 1945 with the defeat of Germany and Japan.
