Read the instructions carefully and follow the guidelines.
1. Choose one artwork from the 19th Century or 20th Century (Modern) periods that we have
looked at in class.
2. Write an essay 1,500 – 2,000 words long connecting the form and content in the chosen
artwork. In other words, you should connect the meaning in the artwork to the use of
color, shape, line, texture, space, composition, etc. For example, why were those
particular colors used in relation to the subject matter? How do the formal elements
(color, line, shape, space, texture, composition) help communicate the meaning and or /
convey a feeling in the work? What do the formal elements symbolize?
3. In addition to your own observations and interpretations, you should compile research
about the artwork, especially related to the meaning behind the art. Use standard APA
format and include a bibliography with a minimum of 3 reputable sources. Any
information gleaned from research should involve the citation of references. Any writing
that is not your own will be considered plagiarism and will result in failure of this
assignment.
4. The format of the paper should be white A4 with a readable font such as Verdana,
Garamond, or Helvetica. Use 10 or 11 pica. The text should be double-spaced.
5. Include a high-res colored image of the artwork on a separate page in the back of the
paper. Label the artwork beneath the image with the title, date it was created, medium,
and dimensions (in centimeters, meters, inches, or feet). Label the artwork as Fig. 1, and
you can refer to the artwork as such in the body of the paper.
6. Titles of artworks should be capitalized and include quotation marks or italicized. For
example, “The Bar at the Folies Bergere” or The Bar at the Folies Bergeres. Also, art
historical periods and movements should be capitalized. For example, Impressionism.
7. Include your name and student id number on the top right of each page.
8. Submit your work via Turnitin. Use the Class ID and Enrollment Key above for your
section.
The paper will be evaluated on depth of discussion, topic focus and cohesiveness,
integration of knowledge, mechanics of writing, and inclusion of an image with caption.
