Presentation delivered by John McManus (TCD) at "Cataloguing and Organisation of Special Collections: by Library Association of Ireland: Rare Books + Cataloguing & Metadata Groups" - Fri 23 March 2018
The document discusses the Legal Deposit Libraries Shared Cataloguing Programme (LDLSCP) between the British Library and other legal deposit libraries in the UK and Ireland, including Trinity College Dublin. It provides an overview of the programme's history from its establishment in 1989, the benefits of cooperation it provides, and recent developments such as moving to linked data and integrating print and digital legal deposits. Trinity College Dublin has contributed over 6,000 catalog records to the programme since 1992, with contributions increasing each year. The future of the programme remains stable but may require adapting to changing library standards and tools.
CAVAL: an Australian collaborative experience, Michelle AgarCONUL Conference
CAVAL is a collaborative organization established in 1978 that provides services to university libraries in Australia to support access to information resources. It offers services such as cataloging, collection storage, and statistics collection. CAVAL operates two high-density storage facilities, CARM1 and CARM2, which house shared print collections and materials from member libraries to reduce costs. While collaboration provides economies of scale and expertise, it also faces challenges such as upfront investment costs and concerns about ceding control over collections. The document discusses both the benefits and challenges of the CAVAL collaborative model.

Preserving our past together: reflections on the Easter Rising 1916 Web Archi...CONUL Conference
The document discusses the Easter Rising 1916 Web Archive project undertaken by the Library of Trinity College Dublin and the Bodleian Library at Oxford University. They collaborated to archive websites relating to the 1916 Easter Rising in Ireland to preserve online content and perspectives for future generations. The project involved identifying relevant sites, securing permissions, collecting over 300 sites, and creating metadata and access points for the archived content. It discusses the planning process, challenges around permissions, and exhibitions created to showcase items from the collection.
Creative collaborations: breathing life into Books of the Dead - Clodagh Neli...CONUL Conference
The document discusses the Library of Trinity College Dublin and its collection of ancient Egyptian manuscripts and artifacts. It highlights several important papyrus fragments and manuscripts in the collection, including the Books of the Dead, mummy anatomy drawings, and Greek papyri fragments from Flinders Petrie's excavations. The presentation provides images from several of the manuscripts to illustrate some of the unique historical documents held in the Trinity College Library collection.
Library Association of Ireland Cataloguing and Metadata Group AGM Keynote presentation by Isabelle Courtney on the topic of the ongoing work of Media Literacy Ireland (MLI).
Media Literacy Ireland is an informal alliance of organisations and individuals working together on a voluntary basis to promote media literacy in Ireland. The Library Association of Ireland (LAI) is a key stakeholder in this initiative and in her presentation, Isabel Courtney will outline the work to date and suggest ways in which LAICMG members can get involved.
The document discusses the challenges of converting a legacy bibliographic dataset from 1872 into modern MARC records. Key challenges included optical character recognition (OCR) errors, mapping difficulties due to missing or inconsistent data, and handling multiple editions within single legacy records. The project used OpenRefine to transform and extract data from the messy legacy records into normalized MARC records, handling issues such as OCR errors, mapping variations, and extracting edition statements into separate records. Modern tools, collaboration, and the pandemic enabling remote work allowed over 5,000 legacy records to be converted.

The document discusses the pamphlet collections of four colleges that merged into Dublin City University (DCU) Library. It provides background on the collections, outlines the transition and challenges integrating them, and proposes a plan to catalogue and classify the pamphlets as a special collection at DCU Library. The collection contains over 24,000 items across many subject areas. The plan is to fully catalogue the materials, separate out rare/vulnerable items, group items by publisher/collection, and classify the general materials by Dewey number to improve organization, access, and preservation of the pamphlets.
The University of Kent partnered with Rochester Cathedral on a project to catalogue and digitize the Cathedral's collection of over 7,500 printed volumes. The project received £1 million in funding and involved cataloguing materials to modern standards, moving books to the Cathedral, and engaging in outreach. Though the timeline extended past original estimates, the collaboration achieved the goals of making the collection accessible online and engaging with academics and the public through workshops and seminars. Lessons included allowing flexibility in timelines for rare materials and capturing knowledge from experienced cataloguers.
The document describes the Université Catholique de Louvain's experience using FRBR (Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records) in their library catalog. Some key points:
1. UCL has been using the VTLS FRBR implementation since 2003 which allows FRBR and non-FRBR records to coexist in one catalog and be displayed differently.
2. Benefits of FRBR include better representation of intellectual works, relationships between works, and improved findability of large works.
3. FRBR records can be created from existing non-FRBR records or new records can be added to existing FRBR structures. Scripts are used to identify potential FRBR candidates.
4.
The document provides an introduction to RDA (Resource Description and Access) and compares it to AACR2. Some key points:
- RDA is based on FRBR and FRAD models which view works, expressions, manifestations, and items differently
- RDA focuses on core elements rather than descriptive levels, uses new terminology, and takes a "record what you see" approach to transcription
- Implementation of RDA began in 2011 and it was recommended that the Library of Congress, National Agricultural Library, and National Library of Medicine implement RDA no earlier than January 2013 after testing
This document provides an overview of Tunepal, a mobile app and website created by Dr. Bryan Duggan that allows users to identify Irish traditional tunes by playing or humming them. It contains over 16,700 tunes accessible on iOS and Android devices. The document discusses how Tunepal works using transcription and search algorithms, its popularity with over thousands of users, and feedback from users praising its ability to help learn tunes. It also outlines Duggan's conclusions that the mobile platform is ideal for this technology and his plans to expand Tunepal in the future to include more genres and social features.
The Digital Collections, Trinity College Library Dublin Repository will provide open access to the library's growing digital collections. It uses a Fedora Commons platform with a clean, intuitive interface and search functionality. Considerations in developing it included long-term preservation of files, performance, limited staffing, and an 8-month development cycle. Technologies used include Fedora Commons, MySQL, and web technologies like HTML, PHP and JavaScript.
The document discusses the Irish Manuscripts Commission's (IMC) experience aggregating content for Europeana from several Irish cultural institutions, including the National Archives of Ireland, Irish Traditional Music Archive, and Chester Beatty Library. It provided technical consultations to other institutions. The content went through a validation and QA process before being ingested into a repository and harvested by Europeana. Issues addressed included identity, rights, and selecting high quality objects with descriptive metadata to drive traffic to the contributing institutions.
The document outlines the aims and requirements for a project to digitize and provide online access to archival collections. The aims were to protect, make accessible, identify relationships between collections, and facilitate new research. Requirements included managing all media types, associating images with records, accommodating standards and users, and producing reports. The system also had to support authority controls, deal with multiple sites/collections, and allow for image manipulation and protection. The result was a redesigned front-end website focusing on online access, with ongoing work on copyright, selection, staffing, and lessons learned.
This presentation includes basic of PCOS their pathology and treatment and also Ayurveda correlation of PCOS and Ayurvedic line of treatment mentioned in classics.
This slide is special for master students (MIBS & MIFB) in UUM. Also useful for readers who are interested in the topic of contemporary Islamic banking.

This month [November, 2010] Sir Terry Pratchett joins the staff at Trinity College Dublin as an adjunct Professor in the School of English. His close relationship with the university began in December 2008 when he was conferred with an honorary degree, and since then the relationship has deepened, with Colin Smythe, Pratchett's literary agent, donating a complete back-catalogue of Terry's published translations to the College Library in 2009

Explain background to decision to catalogue collection
One of the key objectives of the Library of Trinity College Dublin’s Strategic Plan 2015-2020 is to increase visibility and access to the Library’s special collections for the purpose of activating new areas of scholarship and teaching. To facilitate its implementation, the newly established Resource Description Group is charged with the task of bringing the Library’s uncatalogued collections and offline catalogues into the online discovery tools and aligning metadata standards and cataloguing practices throughout the Library.
The retrospective cataloguing of the Terry Pratchett Collection represents the first project initiated by this group. The collection itself was donated to the Library in 2009 by Trinity alumnus and publisher Colin Smythe and consists of a back catalogue of all his works – approximately two thousand volumes in total - translated into over thirty-three languages. When considered in tandem with the Library’s already extensive legal deposit holdings, it was clear that the collection held research potential across a number of disciplines and as such was an ideal candidate for making a previously uncatalogued collection available to scholars

Tomb Room
Retrieve some boxes from the Tomb Room – not more than you can process in one day. Use the sign-out sheet. When leaving your desk, make sure all books are back in their boxes, and return all boxes to the Tomb Room before going home. Once finished, re-shelve the boxes in sequence in the Tomb Room, and indicate completion on the sign-out sheet.
Source records, attach barcodes, and add item records, as described below. Where no suitable record can be found, give the book to a designated cataloguer.

561 ## From the Terry Pratchett Collection.|5IeDuTC
655 #7 English fiction|y20th century.|2local
710 2# Terry Pratchett Collection.|5IeDuTC
Check Sierra (our own records), then BNB, RLUK DEDUP, OCLC (all at once, if convenient).
Follow the usual shortcuts for quality records: in general, prefer RLUK over OCLC; BNB, Oxford and Cambridge records over others; check Encoding Level is blank (or 1 or 4; accept 7; OCLC records can have letter codes: I and L are best; K and M are variable; any other code: consult a cataloguer).
Prefer RDA records, but accept AACR2
Check 008 codes concerning year and country of publication, language, and fiction (must be f or 1).
Check 040|b: must be “eng” (and all non-transcribed fields must be English).
Check the usual fields for accuracy: 100, 245, 260/264, 300, 700.
Add 700 fields for any easily identifiable illustrators and translators.
Add |e relationship designators to end of 100 and 700 fields, using “substitution phrases”. Don’t forget to type a comma first, unless there is an open date (e.g. “Blogs, Joe,|d1940-|eillustrator.”; but “Blogs, Joe,|d1940-1990,|eillustrator.”).
· %a = |eauthor.
· %i = |eillustrator.
· %t = |etranslator.
Do not enter a space between the comma and the |e relationship designator.
Desirable fields include: 240 “uniform title” with translated language in |l subfield; 041 language codes; 250 edition statement; 500 notes on previous editions and prints.
Add 700 fields for any easily identifiable illustrators and translators.
