  1. 1. FRBRFunctional Requirements for Bibliographic Records Our practical experience of FRBR at the Université Catholique de Louvain Belgium Claire Dupont Cataloguing and Authority Control Université catholique de Louvain +32(0)10479313 claire.dupont@uclouvain.be with the collaboration of Antoinette Le Maire and Benoit Erken The Library Association of Ireland Cataloguing and Indexing Group: annual seminar and AGM: “The Future of Cataloguing” – 5 November 2009
  2. 2. Table of contents Historical aspects Positive aspects Nothing is perfect Our database : a mixed catalogue How does it work ? To create a new FRBR record To add a non-FRBR record to an existing structure To identify FRBR candidates Some examples Translations of a work Structural relationship Letters Multiple works Other material FRBR and the future -2-The Library Association of Ireland Cataloguing and Indexing Group: annual seminar and AGM: “The Future of Cataloguing” – 5 November 2009
  3. 3. Historical aspects UCL has been using the VTLS FRBR implementation since December 2003 ; in 2004 a Consortium of 4 Belgian Universities is created : the Académie Louvain ; the data from those 4 universities have been migrated into a Consortium database. Only UCL was running FRBR before ; the Académie moved to the VTLS FRBR Consortium environment in April 2006. -3-The Library Association of Ireland Cataloguing and Indexing Group: annual seminar and AGM: “The Future of Cataloguing” – 5 November 2009
  4. 4. Positive aspects “global” representation of an "intellectual" or "artistic" universe through : collocation ; greater visibility for the end user ; accessibility to "big" works, for examples works of philosophers, great writers, letters, and so on ; structural relationships from work to work -4-The Library Association of Ireland Cataloguing and Indexing Group: annual seminar and AGM: “The Future of Cataloguing” – 5 November 2009
  5. 5. Positive aspects ability to extract FRBR records in a non FRBR format like MARC or XML for exchange and for harvesting in a Union catalogue MODS based (so VTLS Virtua allows exchanges even for FRBR records) ; ability to find FRBR candidates based on a script integrated in VTLS Virtua, and to automatically « FRBR-ize » the good candidates in the catalogue ; ability to use a script based on « thingISBN » to find more FRBR candidates in our catalogue (in development – examples further). -5-The Library Association of Ireland Cataloguing and Indexing Group: annual seminar and AGM: “The Future of Cataloguing” – 5 November 2009
  6. 6. But nothing is perfect … limits of the MARC format and the mapping* (content notes, edition statement for example) ; no way to identify a FRBR record in the index entries.* DELSEY, Tom. Functional analysis of the MARC 21 bibliographic and holdingformats. Washington : Library of Congress, 2002. Document available here :http://www.loc.gov/marc/marc-functional-analysis/original_frbr.html « adapted »for VTLS Virtua by John Espley -6- The Library Association of Ireland Cataloguing and Indexing Group: annual seminar and AGM: “The Future of Cataloguing” – 5 November 2009
