Over the last decade, a real improvement
of ageing conditions has been made
possible by the progresses of medicine and
an increased commitment of public bodies
to this crucial health issue.

RTD Interview : ARNOZAN HOSPITAL (FRA)
SUCCESSFUL AGEING - THE VISION OF PROFESSOR ISABELLE BOURDEL
MARCHASSON – HENRY CHOUSSAT XAVIER ARNOZAN GERONTOLOGICAL CENTRE
Belonging to the Gerontological pole of HENRY CHOUSSAT XAVIER ARNOZAN HOSPITAL and
gifted with a long experience in managing clinical studies, Pr. Isabelle Bourdel Marchasson
shares her vision of the crucial stakes related to the RISTOMED project.
“We and more particularly the ageing populations all wish to remain healthy and avoid serious
chronicle illnesses such as Alzheimer other kind of dysfunctions. Nowadays, the fight against
sedentarity and nutritional disorders, obesity of malnutrition, is considered as the key success
factor to avoid ageing related troubles. The concept of “eating well” has evolved a lot over the
last decades, from a purely quantitative vision where the patient is evaluated in function of its
corpulence to a qualitative approach where the content of what has been eaten is carefully
studied and analyzed. As a matter of fact, bad nutritional habits lead to oxidative stress and
micro-inflammation but also an increased exposure to cardiovascular, physiological and mental
diseases.
Micro-inflammation, for example, can be provoked by a gut micro biota disequilibrium. There
are numerous way of “eating well” according to the extreme diversity of food habits amongst
European countries and that are also the reflect of their cultures’ richness. To propose a
European Guideline on this specific question we will have to perform a complete study on
European eating habits and try to elaborate a diet able to have an impact on micro-
inflammation, gut microbiota and cardiovascular diseases “………RISTOMED can be considered
as first step along this complex way.
The Gerontological Centre Xavier Arnozan and general and for the RISTOMED Project will bring
its expertise in ageing mechanisms, related pathologies but also in conducting researches with
elderly patients, whether they are healthy or presenting ageing troubles.
