PROFILES
Looking to the remarkable story of one woman and her family, we uncover how woodlands are pro-
viding spaces of relief and therapy for individuals across the country as the pandemic continues. Whilst
this story tackles mental health and family connection during a time of lockdown, its lesson far outlast
these times, teaching us the importance of forests for the future health of both the planet and its people.
3. A coastal lifestyle blogger, Hayley Bisofsky-Pope is no stranger
to the good which time outside brings to life. Yet, on March
23rd her appreciation for the natural world would sky-rock-
et as she found herself suddenly trapped inside her home with-
out even a garden for a taste of the outdoors. A new mother, she
quickly found the stress of a national lockdown weighing heavy
on her shoulders. Old battles with her mental health resurfaced
as family tensions flared and sleepless nights became the norm.
Today, Hayley’s life has radically changed for the better. Taking her
young daughter Ocie for daily walks in the forest, she found both
their stresses melt away and a deeper connection rise between them
as together they would learn about all the fascinating things they
found. Since then Hayley has started The Little Naturalists Club, an
online shop sending packs of wildlife information, illustrations and
ID cards to people across the country to use on their own adventures.
She hopes to inspire a new generation of nature advocates as chil-
dren and adults connect with the natural spaces on their doorstep.
Her story demonstrates how it is becoming ever more crucial that
we respect and protect our forests, not simply for their ability to se-
quester carbon and provide a buffer between humans and animals,
but for our health and well-being on even the most personal scale.
HAYLEY’S STORY
4. Seated outside, in the woodlands which she has come to value so
much, we’ll use a relaxed interview style and ask Hayley to intro-
duce herself. We’ll ask her about her early memories of the out-
doors, growing up with a love of the coast and adventures. In an in-
timate self-reflection, she’ll speak about struggling with anxiety and
stress throughout her life, the impact becoming a mother and lock-
down had on her and the solace she would come to find in exploring
woodlands with her daughter. This interview acts as a backbone for
the film, allowing us to explore her life in beautiful cinematic visuals.
Following them through the woods, we’ll see Ocie with her Little Nat-
uralist Club clipboard and ID chart searching for nuts, mushrooms,
and plants whilst her mother speaks about all the great things wood-
lands have brought to their lives. From education for herself and her
daughter, a more authentic connection to the world, and relief from
anxiety to great meals and a better understanding of how trees
support our planet. Seeing it all come together, we watch as Hayley
and Ocie share a delicious foraged meal cooked on a camping stove.
The film ends with Hayley speaking to camera about what forests
mean to her, how they’ve given her health, business and family, and
whyshe nowworks tosharewhatshe’slearntwithpeopleeverywhere.
