Two-thirds of all blind or visually impaired people worldwide are women. Three-quarters of all blindness and visual impairment is preventable or treatable. Studies show that the odds of blindness are 43% higher for women compared to men globally. In industrialized countries, the odds are 63% higher for women, likely due to women living longer and eye diseases increasing with age. Reasons for the gender disparity include certain eye diseases being more prevalent in women and some women lacking equal access to eye care.
