International Women’s Day is a day to think
about how we can make the world a fairer
place for all people.
Girls and women and boys and men are not always treated the same.
Introduction
In the past, women in many countries (including the UK) were treated
differently from men. They did not have the same opportunities and
weren’t allowed to do the same things as men. Sometimes, they were
seen as less important.
Although the lives of many women have got
better, this can unfortunately still happen
today in some places.
In the past, women were not always allowed to:
In the Past
go to school or university;
choose to get married or not;
have a job or be paid fairly for it;
vote in elections;
choose to not have children;
make important decisions about their
lives or their families.
In the Past
Boys were seen
as more valued
than girls.
Some cultures
thought that
girls
were not as
smart as boys.
Many women
were expected
to get married
at a young
age and start
a family.
Women were
not able to
work in
certain jobs
because they
were seen as
‘men’s jobs’.
International Women’s Day takes
place every year on 8th March.
International Women’s Day
celebrates the many amazing
things done by women. It is a
day to think about how women
have influenced the world.
International Women's Day
What Are You Good At?
Think about what you are good at.
What are your friends good at?
Do you have to be a
boy to be good at some
things and a girl to be good
at others? Tell a friend what
you think.
Women Can Do Anything
Everyone – girls and boys – should be
able to follow their dreams.
Follow Your Dreams
International Women’s Day was
created to make sure that everyone,
especially girls, has the right to be
the best they can be.
It’s important for boys to be the best
they can be too!
What Do You Want to Be?
Girls or boys can do any of
these jobs.
Perhaps you'd like to be a builder,
a firefighter or a doctor?
What would you like to be
when you’re older?
Inspiring Women
International Women’s Day is a day when we can think about inspiring
women and all of the good things they've done.
Marie Curie
International Women’s Day
Some inspiring women lived in the past.
“I spent my life looking for ways to make
poorly people better with medicine.”
Florence Nightingale
“I was a nurse who helped soldiers. I also
made their hospitals much better.”
Rosa Parks
International Women’s Day
Some inspiring women campaigned for fairness.
"I campaigned for black people to
be treated fairly."
Emmeline Pankhurst
“I campaigned for the right of
women to vote.”
Malala Yousafzai
International Women’s Day
There are many inspiring women alive today too.
“I campaign for the rights of girls and
women to have an education. I won a
Nobel Peace Prize.”
Mae Jemison
“I was the first black woman astronaut to
travel into space. I help people to learn
about science.”
Why Celebrate
International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day was first
celebrated over 100 years ago in 1910.
The aim was for men and women
across the world to be treated equally.
Why Celebrate
International Women’s Day?
Since then, things have become much
more equal for some men and women.
However, we still need to work hard to
make sure everyone is treated equally.
What Can We Do Now?
How can we make the world a fairer place?
Share your answers to these questions.
Does it matter if toys say ‘for boys’ or ‘for girls’?
Does it matter if girls like football or boys like unicorns?
Is it OK for boys to cry when they’re sad?
Is it OK for girls to carry chairs or books around school?
Finally…
All of us can work together to create a world where everyone is equal.
On 8th March, we celebrate women’s achievements and we challenge
unfairness and inequality.
