Blueprint Reading for
Welders
8th Edition
Unit 11
Basic Joints for Weldment
Fabrications
Objectives
• Identify common joint types
• Identify different welds applied to
each weld type
• Identify special purpose joints
• Define common terms
• Identify required groove types
Basic Joints
• Basic joints for weldment
fabrication:
– Butt
– Corner
– Tee
– Lap
– Edge
• Combinations are also used
Basic Joints (cont’d.)
• For each joint type, many
weldments may be applied
• Weld selection based on many
factors
– Thickness, material to be welded,
strength required, finish, weld location
• Weld symbol has arrow side, other
side, or both sides significance
Other Kinds of Joints
• Other joints for special purposes
• Corner and edge flange joints: for
light materials
• Flare bevel and flare V-groove
joints: for heavier gage materials
– One or two members curved
• Scarf joints: for brazed weldments
Joints Commonly Used
with Structural Shapes
• Many methods used to assemble
structural members to form a joint
• Different weld and groove designs
used with these structural members
• Design of weld and groove usually
the function of the designer
• Standard symbols used to indicate
required welds
Joints Commonly Used
with Structural Shapes
(cont’d.)
• Joints for structural shapes may be
formed by cutting and bending
• May be more economical
– Less cutting and welding required
• Heavy structural shapes:
– Groove may be provided for without
formal preparation
Joint Fitup
• Design of structure may require
joint spacing or root opening
• Indicated by welding symbols or
notes on the print
• Spacing as required ensures
overall dimensions maintained
Summary
• Basic joints for weldment
fabrication:

– Lap
– Edge
• For each joint type, many
